  2. 1. The present tense Simple Present Tense : I walk (everyday) Present Continuous Tense : I am walking (now) Present Perfect Tense : I have walked (already) Present Perfect Continuous : I have been walking (since morning)

Simple Present Tense • For a habitual or repeated action, something that • we do every day, always, often or usually. • e.g: She usually goes to the library on weekends. • The bus picks up the workers at 3.00 p.m. every • day. • 2. For a general truth or a fact. • e.g: Actions speak louder than words. • Night follows day.

  4. 3. For something or an action happening now. e.g: Watch how the bird flies. Look, my friend, it comes 4. For a planned action. e.g: The football match starts in five minutes. The show starts next week. 5. To give instructions. e.g: Clean all the windows and sweep the floor. Pour the mixture into the baking tray and place it in the oven.

  5. 6. To express thoughts and feelings for the moment. e.g: The man is not following the schedule. I enjoy eating durians and rambutans.

Present Continuous Tense am/is/are + verb + ing. • To show an action is still going on at the time of speaking • and is not completed yet. • e.g: She is kicking the ball towards the goal post. • Mother is e-mailing a letter to my brother in London. • 2. To show a planned action. • e.g: He is taking the bus to Fraser’s Hill this afternoon. • She is sitting for the grade 8 music exam this Saturday.

  8. 3. To show an action done repeatedly. e.g: He is always coming to school late. She is always shouting at the top of her voice. 4. To show progress or change. e.g: My handwriting is becoming neater day by day. His swimming style is improving.

Present Perfect Tense • has/have + the past participle (active form) • Has / have been + past participle (passive form) • For an action which has just been completed. • e.g: I have just finished reading the book. • I have seen the house that you bought. • 2. For an action that has been going on from the past, • something that happened in the past but is still going on, • usually used with ‘since’ or ‘for’. • e.g: He has came home. (The sentence implies he ‘came’ • home and is still at home.) • They have lived in this house since 1985. • He has known me for twenty years.

  11. 3. For an action that happened or did not happen at an unspecified time in the past. e.g: She has booked tickets for the musical Holiday On Ice. I have not baked the cake. 4. For something that happened in the past that affects the present. e.g: The construction of the condominium has blocked out the view of the sea for us. The forest fire has polluted the air to be hazy.

For an action in progress recently. • e.g: It has been raining cats and dogs for days. • I have been thinking of taking a trip to Mongolia.
