  2. Pop Art is… • Pop art is a visual art movement that emerged in the mid 1950s in Britain and in parallel in the late 1950s in the United States. The Independent Group, founded in London in 1952, is regarded as the precursor to the Pop Art movement. • A movement that can be characterized as pop because of its use of comics and publicity images and its simplification of images and photographic compositions.

  3. Some of the great Influential Pop Artists were… • Gerald Murphy (March 25, 1888 – October 17, 1964) , Charles Demuth (November 8, 1883 - October 23, 1935) and Stuart Davis(December 7, 1894–June 24, 1964) . They created paintings prefiguring the pop art movement that contained pop culture imagery such as mundane objects culled from American commercial products and advertising design.

  4. Some of their work.

  5. Andy Warhol (American Pop Artist, 1928-1987 ) • He designed things like advertisements and windowdisplays for stores. He soon became an artist, and was famous for his Pop Art, which was repeating everyday objects and images. One of his most famous paintings is his colorful portrait of American movie star, Marilyn Monroe.

  7. More examples of Warhol’s work

  8. Roy Lichtenstein (27 October1923 – 29 September1997) was a prominent Americanpop artist, his work heavily influenced by both popular advertising and the comic book style.

  9. Your project will be to… • Recreate a favorite meal in clay using the pop art style. • Think about how you can make it look real, but add that cartoon-like quality some pop art may have. • Use acrylic paint to give the meal a more appealing look.

  10. Examples for your projects

  11. Clay Terms • Wedge: To knead the clay and work out air bubbles. • Score: To scratch into the surface of the clay to attach pieces. • Slip: Watery clay used to attach other clay pieces. • Leather hard: Dry and still able to use slip and attach pieces, but not dry enough to fire. • Bone Dry: Ready to fire in the kiln. • Bisque: Fired but not glazed.

  12. If you do not wedge your clay properly, it will…. • EXPLODE!!!!!! • Also, you have to hollow out large areas to prevent explosion! ½ inch sides!

  13. Materials • Clay and slip (liquid clay used for connecting clay pieces. • Clay tools • Acrylic paint

  14. Think about the style! • Sketch some ideas • Think about ways to make your project interesting, do not be lame! • You can make more than one type of food to make the project cool! • Be creative in your choices!
