  1. MR STUCHBERY PRESENTS USING THE SAFE WAY

  2. WHAT YOU MUST KNOW • Those under the age of 13 are not allowed to have a Facebook. • Facebook is a business. It makes money through advertising and gathering information about its users. • Facebook gathers this information by asking you to share it – personal details, date of birth, your favourite things, even your photos. • While Facebook is able to access this information, others are able to as well, if you’re not careful about applying the right settings to your Facebook. • There are many people out there who would use the information you post on Facebook in ways you wouldn’t want it to be used – bullying, blackmail, etc.

  3. FIRST THINGS FIRST • Do not share your phone number, your address or even your e-mail address. Give them out to your friends, but don’t put them online. • Don’t add ‘randoms’ as friends – make sure you know people in real life before adding them. • Don’t post anything online that you wouldn’t feel comfortable with your parents seeing.

  4. LOCK UP YOUR FACEBOOK! Your options for locking up your Facebook profile are accessed from the Account menu. Select the opition ‘Privacy Settings’.

  5. MAKE YOUR CHOICE. Selecting ‘Friends of Friends’ or ‘Friends Only’ ensures that random people cannot access Your Facebook page and gain access to your personal details. Remember to click on ‘Apply These Settings’ after selecting the option you want.

  6. MORE GOOD IDEAS • You have the right to feel safe and comfortable online. If you ever feel uncomfortable about the way someone is talking to you on Facebook, talk to a parent first. • If someone is consistently attacking or harassing you over Facebook, you can make Facebook aware of this by clicking Report User on their profile, underneath their picture. Facebook will investigate and suspend the user, if appropriate. • If somebody from McKinnon is harassing you, please tell your Student Manager ASAP. Do NOT allow it to continue.

  7. I REPEAT: IF SOMEONE FROM MCKINNON IS HARASSING YOU ONLINE, TELL YOUR STUDENT MANAGER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! DO NOT ALLOW IT TO CONTINUE!

  8. ANY QUESTIONS? FACEBOOK CAN BE A WONDERFUL, FUN WAY TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR FRIENDS. HOWEVER, IT DOES HAVE ITS SHARE OF RISKS. BE SMART, PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION AND YOU’LL AVOID THOSE RISKS. THANK YOU!
