Historical background • May 1898 - in the presence of Royal persons the foundation of Moscow industrial school took place at Miusskaya square • 1920 - it was turned into Mendeleyev Institute of Chemical Technologies • 1992 - under the Government`s resolution the Institute was transformed into University • Since then the University has been constantly mentioned at the first place in Russian Technical Universities rating - list

General information • Mendeleyev University is the major educational institution in Russia and well known abroad in the field of Chemical Technology • The Diploma of Honorary Doctor of MUCTR has been awarded to 17 great contemporaries, e.g.: • Dennis L. Medose (USA) 1989, • Margaret Thatcher (UK) 1993, • Umberto Colombo (Italy) 1994, • Jacques - Ives Cousteau (France) 1997, • Thor Heyerdahl (Norway) 1999

Scientific activities: • University teaching staff: • 31 academicians • 155 Doctors of Science, Professors • 550 Associate professors • Scientific contacts are maintained with 40 Universities of 27 countries • There are about 8000 students in MUCTR: • 130 students from 40 foreign countries; • 500 postgraduate students go through regular training program

Structure of the University MUCTR trains specialists at 14 faculties: • Technology of Polymers • Physico–Chemical Department • Technology of Inorganic Substances • Technology of Organic Substances • Chemical Technology of Silicates • Cybernetics of Chemical Technological Processes • Department of Engineering Ecology • Economics • Polytechnics • Chemistry Pharmaceutics • Chemical Technology Engineering • and 7 high colleges • (university diploma): Chemistry

The Department of Chemical Technology of Ceramics and Refractors Established in 1933 Main Technology Developments • The major developments carried out at the Department of Chemical Technology of Ceramics and Refractors recently are: • powders, whiskers and products from silicon carbide, • composite materials SiC-Si • aluminum nitride ceramics with high thermoconductivity and cermet from AlN-Me (Me = Fe, Ni, Cr, Mo, W)

The Department of Chemical Technology of Ceramics and Refractors • ceramics for external catcher of nuclear reactors, • delicate cellular catalyst carriers and catalysts, • self-destructing ceramic rods from crystobalyte and calcium silicate for metal casting, • dense and porous ceramics from calcium phosphate for medicine, • strength zirconia ceramics, • high effective light sources excited by high frequency plasma etc.

Cooperation with Foreign Partners • Scientific collaboration with research centersin Europe and USA: • MIT • Boston University • Scientific cooperation and information exchange with: • LG (Korea), KIER (Korea) • Rucorerc (Korea-Russia International center) • Beijing Institute Chemical technology (China) • Tampere University (Finland) etc.

Application of Research Developments in Industries • production of high temperature heaters from lanthanum chromate • bone implants • ceramic scalpels in medical surgery • ceramic membranes, ecological safe binders for refractors production • bio treatment of clays and ceramic masses by bacteria • a number of refractors as well as MHD generators • some electronic devices etc.

Cooperation We Are Looking For Possible fields of cooperation: 1) Detonation, synthesis of metastable oxide phases for electronics 2) Development of processes for manufacturing of nanoceramic materials or porous strong calcium phosphate ceramic materials 3) Development, sales of devices for catalytic processes on ceramic carriers and catalysts. We propose cooperation in all areas of research and developments above mentioned in the presentation
