  2. Clay • A natural material found in the earth. • Is moldable when wet. • Becomes hard and durable when fired in a kiln.

  3. Firing • A kiln is the oven used to fire clay. • Originally a hole in the ground. • Greeneware is unfired, dry clay. • Bisque fire to become solid, like stone. • Glaze fire to add glossy, colorful glass surface.

  4. History 24,000 B.C. • Ceramic figurines used for ceremonial purposes 14,000 B.C. • First tiles made in Mesopotamia and India 9000-10,000 B.C. • Pottery making begins 5000-8000 B.C. • Glazes discovered in Egypt

  5. Glazing • Do NOT glaze the bottom, leave a space NEAR the bottom (this accounts for dripping). • Do NOT mix glazes! • Put at least 3 coats of glaze over the whole piece.
