  7. Ideas to improve KGAC • Provide 24 runs at the new shelter • Current shelter goes over 16 dogs almost 20% of the time and 12 dogs (current capacity) almost 50% of the time • Need to plan for future growth of the county • Provide basic vaccinations to dogs in the shelter • Include a budget of $5,000 to cover rabies, bordetella, and parvo/distemper vaccinations • 158 dogs adopted/transferred in 2007 x $30/dog = $4,740 • More hours open to the public • Currently open 24 hours per week • Only open 3 hours during non-business times • Being open evenings and weekends will increase adoption rates KGARL Presentation to the KG BOS

  8. Suggestions for finding funds • Increase the adoption fee • Current fee is $10 + $50 alteration deposit • Westmoreland County pull fee is $20 • Caroline County pull fee is $45 + $5 if vaccines are given • Increase adoption fee to cover cost of vaccinations • Keep the transfer fee low to entice rescue groups to pull • Sell dog licenses at the time of adoption for county residents • Increase the reclamation fee • Current fee is $5/day • Encourages people to leave their dogs for cheap boarding • Increase the fee for repeat offenders KGARL Presentation to the KG BOS

  9. Suggestions for finding funds (Cont) • Create a fund specifically for KGAC donations • Current donations may be used for general county funds • KGARL can help raise money if we knew it would help KGAC specifically • Donations cannot be counted on and should not be considered when putting together the yearly budget • Expect Virginia Code 3.2-6529 to increase dog license sales • The veterinarian will forward a copy of the rabies certificate to the treasurer of the locality where the vaccination occurs KGARL Presentation to the KG BOS

  10. Summary • Animal Shelter Recommendations • Make construction of new shelter, with 24 runs, a priority • Provide vaccinations to dogs in the shelter • Keep the shelter open more hours to increase adoptions • Suggestions for Funding • Increase adoption fee • Sell dog licenses at the time of adoption for county residents • Increase reclamation fee • Create a fund specifically for KGAC donations • Enforce Virginia code 3.2-6529 • The King George Animal Rescue League is here to help!
