Why Now? • We needed to: • Respond to teachers’ concerns regarding student behavior and school culture • Continue what was started at the elementary and middle school level • Clearly communicate behavioral expectations • Emphasize positive interactions and behaviors • Recognize students on a regular basis for doing the right thing

Why do we need it? • The mission of SHS is to help students realize his/her potential by learning the knowledge, skills and behaviors that promote both personal fulfillment and civic responsibility. • SHS Core Values and Beliefs – School Culture • All members of the school community demonstrate honor, respect and responsibility in their actions and decisions.

SHSThe Trojan Code • Behavioral Expectations: • Respectful – showing consideration or appreciation for people’s thoughts, feelings, requests, ideas and property • Honorable – acting with honesty, fairness, and with integrity • Responsible – being accountable for one’s actions as well as being reliable and dependable

  6. Place Specific and Clearly Defined • Academic Setting • Hallway • Cafeteria • Sporting Events • Assemblies • School Grounds • Restroom • Bus

Thank You Program • Trojan Code Tickets with weekly drawings for students and teachers • Quarterly drawings for honor roll, perfect attendance, and no disciplinary referrals • Trojan Code Pledge (Honor Code) with transcript designation • Thank You Thursdays – positive recognition during announcements • Other opportunities during class meetings, school announcements and local news publications • Positive postcards to send home to parents with address labels in each of the faculty rooms

  8. 4th Quarter Pilot Spring 2011: Perfect attendance for students and teachers Spring 2012: CICO • Student incentives: prom tickets, yearbooks, parking space, senior portrait sitting, fall sports pass, gift cards, choice of open study period, etc. • Teachers: choice of duty and choice of prep period • Tier 2 pilot – CICO with 4 students

Structuresin Place: • Monthly Trojan Code meetings – working meetings • Monthly School Culture meetings - TC reports out here to a larger group • Monthly Data team meetings • Faculty meeting and professional development time • Monthly student committee meetings • Trojan Tickets/Thank You Program • Trojan Code Blasts (weekly) • 2012 – 2013: Expansion of SHS Connect through grade 11 with monthly Trojan Code focus

Professional Development Sessions • Interdisciplinary groups • Focused on: • What is PBIS and how can it work in our school • Developing and defining behavior statement and expectations • Creating the matrix • Revising the office discipline referral form • Revising course syllabi to include the Trojan Code expectations • Data updates • PBISWorld.com • Evalution of the program

  11. Beginning of the year roll-out • Professional development session for teachers in August • Two class meetings during the first week of school • Weekly discussions during SHS Connect (advisory)

Current Challenges • Keeping the momentum going: booster sessions, pep rallies for winter and spring sports, class meetings, student videos, weekly e-mail blasts, Trojan Code Sports Night • Funding for Thank You Program: grant from SPTC, budgeted for 2012-2013, no or low cost incentives • Loss of faculty meeting and professional development time: time in February and future faculty meetings • Class cutting: data indicates this is our biggest issue: student survey, revision of consequences • Development of Tier 2: analyzing what practices we have in place, piloting CICO, continued PD with CREC

  13. By the Numbers: • As of March 30: • 8.88% received 1 referral (tier 1) • 7.35% received 2-6 referrals (tier 2) • 5.57% received >6 referrals (tier 3) • Total number of referrals is 2411 • 66% of all referrals are for class cutting

Students with IEPS: • 378 of our 2411 referrals come from students with IEPs • 15.68% of total referrals come from the 8.57% of the population that has an IEP • Grade 9             3.11% of total referrals • Grade 10            5.18% of total referrals • Grade 11            2.20% of total referrals • Grade 12            5.18% of total referrals

  15. On a POSITIVE note: • 793 students (50%) pledged the Trojan Code • 823 Trojan Code Tickets were turned in during quarter 1 to 423 (25%) students • 548 Trojan Code Tickets were turned in during quarter 2 to 276 (17%) students • 1600 students learned the fight song • 78% of students have ZERO referrals • 86% of teachers report a positive change in school culture • 94% of teachers have given out Trojan Tickets
