  1. CLIL: a content-based approach to language teaching Author: Luca Marchiori Director of Academic Affairs EF language Travel

  2. What is CLIL? • Why is CLIL important? • What are the advantages? • How is it done? • Case study: a CLIL lesson

  3. What is CLIL? • Teaching non-linguistic subjects in English • 2 scenarios: • Content teacher teaches in English • English teacher uses content lessons • Using languages to learn and learning • to use languages

  4. Importance of CLIL? • Foreign languages no longer purely for study • Increased need for communication across borders • Increased need for academic language • as people study abroad • In Europe, EU / Council of Europe looking at • ways to promote bilingualism • Some countries already implementing CLIL

  5. Fast Track School subjects chosen for Units (Language through content) Culture Files (Content through language)

  6. CLIL advantages • Motivation • Places language at centre of curriculum • Background knowledge • Holistic approach to learning • Meaningful contexts • Time saving: more exposure to language • Variety of teaching methods

  7. CLIL methodology • Text based • Four skills • Reading: main input method • Listening: secondary input • Speaking: communication • Writing: output / linguistic recycling • Lexical approach

  8. Lexical approach • Unifying principle behind language is collocation NOT grammar • Key skill of ‘noticing’ • Subject specific / academic / other • CLIL materials encourage noticing language within texts

  9. CLIL lesson The Boeing 777 is a long-range, wide-body twin-engine airliner built by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The world's largest twinjet and commonly referred to as the ‘Triple Seven’, it can carry between 283 and 368 passengers in a three-class configuration and has a range from 5,235 to 9,450 nautical miles (9,695 to 17,500 km). Distinguishing features of the 777 include the six wheels on each main landing gear, its circular fuselage cross section, the largest diameter turbofan engines of any aircraft, the pronounced ‘neck’ aft of the flight deck, and the blade-like end to the tail cone. As of July 2008, 56 customers have placed orders for 1,088 777s. Direct market competitors to the 777 are the Airbus A330-300, A340, and A350 XWB, which is currently under development. The 777 may eventually be replaced by a new product family, the Boeing Y3, which would draw upon technologies from the 787.

  10. CLIL lesson Pre-reading exercise 1. When was the last time you travelled by air? Do you know what kind of plane it was? How many engines did it have? How many seats were in each row? Do you know the names of any kinds of aeroplane?

  11. CLIL lesson • 2. Student A • Read the text below and ask student B the questions to find out the missing information. • The Boeing 777 is a long-range, wide-body twin-engine airliner built by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The world's largest twinjet and commonly referred to as the ‘________’, it can carry between 283 and 368 passengers in a _______-class configuration and has a range from 5,235 to _______ nautical miles (9,695 to 17,500 km). • What is the Boeing 777? • What is its nickname? • How many classes does it have? • What is its maximum range in nautical miles?

  12. CLIL lesson • 2. Student B • Read the text below and ask student B the questions to find out the missing information. • The Boeing 777 is a long-range, wide-body ________-engine airliner built by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The world's ________ twinjet and commonly referred to as the ‘Triple Seven’, it can carry between 283 and ________ passengers in a three-class configuration and has a range from 5,235 to 9,450 nautical miles (________ to 17,500 km). • How many engines does the 777 have? • How does its size compare with other similar planes? • What is the maximum number of passengers it can carry? • How many kilometres is 9,450 nautical miles?

  13. 3. Look at the illustration and label the following parts of the plane: • the twin engines • circular fuselage • tail cone • turbofan • the ‘neck’

  14. CLIL lesson 4. Look at the completed text. Look at the underlined words. Which words on either side of them are closely connected to them? As of July 2008, 56 customers have placed orders for 1,088 777s. Direct market competitors to the 777 are the Airbus A330-300, A340, and A350 XWB, which is currently under development. The 777 may eventually be replaced by a new product family, the Boeing Y3, which would draw upon technologies from the 787.

  15. CLIL lesson 5. Look at the information below. Write a text about the Airbus A300. Orders: 40 customers, 300 planes Range: medium Engine: 2 General Electric CF6-50A Developers: Airbus Consortium Seats 2 class: 266 Range fully loaded: 6,670 km or 3,600 nm
