  3. Early History of Macomb County • Macomb County organized in 1818. • It was the third county in Michigan. • Early settlers were French and Native Americans. • American settlement began in earnest after the Erie Canal opened in 1825.

Early History of Macomb County • The charter culture was Yankee and Yorker. • 2/3 of settlers were from New York and New England. • Characteristics: • Decentralized town plan • Commercial focus • Wheat/ dairy culture (Macomb Variant-unusually high percentage of Corn Production) • Republican party • Temperance culture

  7. Macomb County According to the 2005-2007 American Community Survey 3-Year Estimates, there were 16,699 people identifying as Hispanic/Latino in Macomb County, composing 2% of the total population.

Macomb County The educational attainment of the of Macomb County shows a pattern characteristic of a area of skilled and technical workers: Higher than average High School averages and lower than average college completion. 86.8% of Macomb County residents completed high school or above, while 21.1% hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher (the national figures are 84% and 27% respectively). 9.6% of the county’s population is foreign born.
