What Is TreeVitalize? • The TreeVitalize program is a partnership of • Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) • PA Community Forests (PCF) • Penn State Extension Urban Forestry • Western Pennsylvania Conservancy • Pennsylvania Horticultural Society • Communities and volunteer groups Trees Count PA! Program Goals • DCNR’s goals for the TreeVitalize program are to: • Help to build effective urban forest management programs in all of the state’s 2600 municipalities • Train community volunteers & municipal workers to assist in the planting and early care of trees; and • Build community capacity for the long term management of urban forests.

Program History • The program was initiated in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area in 2004 • Serving communities within the City & four surrounding counties • Bucks, Chester, Delaware & Montgomery • Funding Awarded: $2,000,000 • Match: at least $2M • Trees Planted: 200,000 • Tree Tenders Trained 3,000

Program History In 2008, the program was expanded to include the City of Pittsburgh and beginning in 2011 communities throughout Allegheny County Neighborhoods & municipalities: 69 participating Funding Awarded: $1,000,000 Match: at least $1M Trees Planted: 20,000 Tree Tenders Trained: 1,000 Photo courtesy of Tree Pittsburgh

Program History In Fall 2008, the Bureau of Forestry began expanding the program to the 12 Metro Areas with grants awarded to communities through county government partners Metro Areas: Erie, Altoona, Johnstown, State College, Williamsport, Carlisle-Harrisburg, Lebanon, York, Lancaster, Reading, Allentown-Bethlehem, Scranton-Wilkes Barre Communities Served: 139 Funding Awarded: $690,240 Match: 1,342,047 Trees Planted: 7,635 Tree Tenders Trained 400

  7. Program History Beginning in 2013 tree planting grants are available to communities in all counties outside of those served by WPC and PHS All applications are submitted to PA Community Forests, with regional grant review teams County government partners (Metro Partner) grants phased out

Tree Planting Grant ApplicationFunding Allocation Community Size Maximum Grant Match Population up to 10,000 $10,000 1:1 Population up to 30,000 $20,000 1:1 Population 30,000 or more $30,000 1:1 Please be advised that other state funding cannot be used as match for a TreeVitalize grant. DCNR & PCF reserve the right to determine the amount of funding to be awarded. At times, this may be less than the maximum amount requested.

Tree Planting Grant Application • Who is eligible? • Municipalities and 501(c)(3) organizations are eligible • Which counties are eligible? • *All counties are eligible • *Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery & Philadelphia counties may not apply for this grant. Please apply via the “Tree Request” application--administered through the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society & Western Pennsylvania Conservancy

Tree Planting Grant Application • Is there a match? • Yes, there is a 1:1 Match • Cash & In-kind (donated time & material) contributions are acceptable • Do I need a planting plan? • Yes, an approved planting plan is required before application submittal • Plan to be reviewed and approved by DCNR Service Forester or PSU Urban Forester • Plan indicating planting locations and proposed tree species • Planting locations must be on public property

  14. How to Apply 2. Connect with DCNR or PSU Forester • Discuss planting plan • Include map, planting locations & tree species • Arrange for Forester to make a site visit to review locations. S/he will provide technical assistance & helpful information to keep your project moving

  15. How to Apply 3. Seek project approval from: • Municipal officials • Adjoining property & business owners • PENNDOT (if planting along PENNDOT ROW) • Utilities (PA one call)

Register for upcoming Tree Tenders® training • Dates and locations are posted on www.treevitalize.net • Oil City November 1 • On-line training 1 hr/week : January 16, 23, 30, Feb 6, 13, 20, 27. • Full-day and multi-day trainings are offered statewide • Instruction by PSU Urban Foresters, DCNR Service Foresters, PHS (Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware & Montgomery counties) & TreePittsburgh (Allegheny County) • Tree Tender Requirements • New Applicant = 2 representatives • Re-Applying = 1 new representative each time

How to Apply • Project Narrative—no more than three pages • Introduction • Demonstrate need for additional tree cover • Regional Impacts • Evidence of municipal support (staff and resources) for the planting project and commitment to long term maintenance • Community Involvement • Commitment by local volunteers, municipal staff, and elected officials to attend “Tree Tenders®” • Evidence of progress towards the development of a sustainable urban forest management program • Tree City USA Status

Community Tree Request Application Western Pennsylvania Conservancy • Pittsburgh Region • City of Pittsburgh Neighborhoods • Allegheny County municipalities • Eligible for 10-100 trees • If approved, your group will receive: • Between 10 and 100 trees • Assistance with concrete cutting • Tree stakes, ties, mulch & watering buckets • Priority Tree Tenders enrollment Available within Allegheny County

Additional TreeVitalize Grant Opportunities • Tree Inventory Grants • Available to all communities • Funding may be used to hire professional forestry consultants to complete inventory or fund volunteer inventory • Data collectors and additional tools to complete project may be available for volunteers • i-Tree workshops will also be offered in various locations of the state for educational opportunities • Please check www.treevitalize.net website in winter 2014 for announcements.

Watersheds • TreeVitalize Streams (Statewide) • $1 per tree reimbursement opportunity available • Over 33,639 trees have been planted through this partnership • TreeVitalize Watersheds (Philadelphia Region) • Small grants available to communities located within (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery & Philadelphia counties) • Over 8,000 trees seasonally are planted through this partnership
