  2. Construct a frame A building needs a strong frame to stand, and so does a good speech. Use the following to build your frame: Capture Motivate Assert Preview Point-Support Action

  3. Capture Get the audience’s attention!! Startling Statement Quotation Rhetorical Question Illustration Humorous Anecdote

  4. Examples • Startling statement- Did you know that 46% of all marriages end in divorce? • Quotation- “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” • Rhetorical Question- Are you ever tired of eating the same snack every day? • Illustration- Imagine a puppy laying cold, alone, hungry and frightened. • Humorous Anecdote- I remember this funny story about . . .

  5. Motivate Tell the audience why your speech is important to them!! Penalty: If you don’t, you lose. Reward: If you do, you win. Curiosity: If you want to know more, you’ll find out.

  6. Assert State your topic!! In one specific and clear statement, tell your audience exactly what your speech will be about. This is the topic!!

  7. Preview Summarize your main points!! You should have at least three main points. You should state each main point in the preview. You DO NOT elaborate on the main points in the preview.

  8. The Capture, Motivate, Assert, and Preview make up the INTRODUCTION to your speech. Make sure the audience understands the purpose and structure of your speech before you begin any elaboration.

  9. Point - support Add bricks to your frame!!! For each of your three main points, you should include statements which support or explain each point. These could be examples, statistics, quotations, etc.

  10. The main point and your supporting statements make up the BODY of your speech. Make sure your elaboration of each main point helps to support or explain that point. Your house should be sturdy and strong!!

  11. Action Put your audience to work!! Tell your audience what to do now that that have the information you have provided. Link your action statement to your capture. action capture

  12. Your Action statements are the CONCLUSION of your speech. After you tell the audience what they should do now and why, leave them with a final statement which they will remember.
