Honoredaumier • Honore Daumier was born in Marsielle, France on February 26th, 1808. • In 1816, he moved to Paris and became very interested in art. • In 1823, he enrolled in Academie Suisse, an art school in Paris. • After working with litography, Daumier started his artistic career small; he worked with plates, advertisements, etc.
ANALYSIS • This painting represents the lower class in the mid 1800s who were most affected by industrialism. It shows the types of people who could only afford a third class carriage (hence, “The Third Class Carriage”) ticket on a train. It also displays the crowded conditions in the third class. • Daumier was known to defend the poor frequently, thus this painting was created in hopes of shining light on these conditions and having them changed.
