  2. Abate V. To reduce in amount, degree, or intensity If this headache doesn’t abate soon, I may have to go home and crawl into bed.

  3. Adversity N. difficulty; hardship; misfortune Even though Winston faced much adversity, he was determined to have a prosperous life; he never slacked off studying.

  4. Deleterious Adj. Causing harm or damage The deleterious effects of sunbathing are well documented, but I still lay out at the beach.

  5. Rancorous Adj. showing ill will, hatred, or deep-seated resentment; unforgiving The interview went well until Steve’s rancorous attitude toward his current boss showed. Never down a supervisor in an interview (even if it’s true)!

  6. Reparation N. Compensation (to right a wrong); restitution The U.S. government paid reparations to Asian Americans after WWII internments.

  7. Solace N. Comfort in a time of sadness Many people find solace in prayer or meditation; connecting with a higher power can help abate our feelings of sadness.

  8. Abscond V. To leave secretly Juliet absconded in the night to be with Romeo; her family found out the next morning that she was gone.

  9. Bane N. Source of harm or ruin; a curse I joke that my kids’ attitudes are the bane of my existence, but really I love them (even when sassy).

  10. Engender V. To bring into existence Maria’s husband’s infidelity engendered such feelings of hatred that she never forgave him.

  11. Lament N. Passionate expression of griefV. Wail; mourn People in Israel express laments at the Wailing Wall (or Western Wall).
