  2. Expunge • To strike or blot out; erase • Luckily, Terrence was a minor when he was charged with shoplifting and so his crime was eventually expunged from his record.

  3. Anguish • Intense distress, suffering, or pain • Nothing can compare to the anguish I felt the day my Grandmother passed away.

  4. Carnage • The slaughter of many people in battle; massacre • The carnage from the Battle of Gettysburg was so vast that the fields were red with blood.

  5. Coalition • A combination or alliance, especially a temporary one between persons, factions, states, etc • Businesses in Bedford County formed a coalition to create and sponsor activities for teens to encourage healthy and safe outlets for entertainment.

  6. Salvage • The act of saving anything/property from fire, damage, etc • After the tornado, there was not much left to salvage from the destroyed homes.

  7. Ricochet • Motion of an object rebounding or deflecting from the surface it passes over • The glass ornament fell onto the ground and shards ricocheted until the entire floor was covered with sharp fragments.

  8. Strife • Vigorous or bitter conflict, discord, or antagonism • Unfortunately, whenever my siblings and I spend time together, we revisit past moments of strifeover old disagreements.

  9. Quail • To lose heart or courage in difficulty or danger • The soldiers quailed and shuddered as they heard the booms from bombs in the distance.

  10. Pugnacious • Inclined to quarrel or fight readily • My pugnacious cat, Binx, scratches me unexpectedly, even though I shower him with gifts of catnip and mouse toys.

  11. Preemptive • Having power to prevent an anticipated situation or occurrence • The high school took preemptive measures to avoid scoring poorly on state assessments by providing test preparation during the normal school day.
