  16. Stuff • you learn by variety of approaches • notes, video, lecture, discussion, book, PEERS • my lecture notes are my guide • make your own! • www - outline posted after class

  17. The Text • use all the book has to offer • Glossary for terms (learn the language) • do readings before class • lectures do not mirror text • text is a supplement to the lectures • read the opening story to each chapter

  18. Learning is not a spectator sport • You must participate • Think • Answer questions • Take notes • Interact • Discussions (group, class) • debrief

  19. Your grade = intelligence + attendance + participation + study It’s a full-time job!! 15 credits = 45 hrs/week Time management crucial...

  20. What is ‘Participation’? • aka: quiz, assignment • rewards attendance + helps me do surveys • points added on to your total at end • you are not penalized by not doing them

  21. Mission Impossible • 250 students x 30 classes = 7500 interactions • it is impossible for me to repeat the lecture or announcements for everyone who misses • do not tell me you will miss a class • it is not necessary • ‘Are you doing anything important in tomorrow’s class?’

Other Stuff • can’t switch sections • see me early for problems (not at end of semester) • Academic Success Center (study tips, tutor) • makeup for missed exams? • No • But if legitimate reason (tell me asap) • correspond with email • don’t sit in bottom corner chairs • raise hand high, talk loud, don’t be shy • fire?: exit bottom & top • freshmen issues

Respect • courteous behavior… • turn cell phones off (don’t leave to make/receive call) • keep talking to minimum • See me if you are bothered by talkers • no reading newspapers • no meals during class • take care of your own garbage (recycle) • 3:30 is start time, not arrival time • late entry disruptive • class ends at 4:45 • don’t pack up until I signal • the deal...
