  5. Nonnative = Not intelligent It is difficult to learn a new language and content in that language at the same time. That is why we have to get

  6. Show your plans… Having an agenda each day lets your students know what they will learn and reduce anxiety. Include “I Can” statements for the content objectives and language objectives.

  7. WIDA Can Do Descriptors • Each student has a WIDA proficiency level that is determined by their ACCESS scores. Their proficiency levels are in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. • WIDA “Can Do” descriptors describe what our students are expected to do in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

  8. Pre-teaching Vocabulary • Gallery Walk • Teacher will display the vocabulary on large sheets of paper across the classroom. Students will walk around the classroom and write what they know (or think they know) about the words. Follow up with a classroom discussion. • Teachers can also post pictures related to the content and have the students explain what they see in the picture. For newcomers use key words to help them describe the pictures. • Cognates and Polysemous Words • Cognates and polysemous words help students link background knowledge to the lesson • Group Activities • Talk a Mile a Minute- Students will describe a word or event to the group in one minute without saying the word. Have the students work in pairs to determine the vocabulary word.

  9. Give Them Time to Talk! • Students learn by vocalizing their ideas. Allow them to form groups or pairs to express their thoughts about the lesson. • Think Pair Share • Tea Party (credit: Mrs. Gomez de la Torre) • For quieter days: • Write Around • Students will form groups and write their thoughts about the topic. It is also great for summarizing or creating stories.

  10. Differentiation • Simplify, simplify again, and then simplify some more! • Use a tiered system when creating assignments or tests. • Differentiating is not dumbing it down. Keep the content but match the expectations to the student’s WIDA’s can do descriptors.

  11. For example… Scientific Method • List the six steps in the scientific method (Tier C) • Put the six steps of the scientific method in the correct order (Provide the scientific steps.) (Tier B) • Draw/name two of the scientific steps (Tier A) • Continue to add scientific steps daily

  12. Give them the answers??? • Provide students with a completed study guide. Hey, it’s okay to give them the answers. • Providing the students with all of the information up front will allow them to quickly gain understanding and build on that understanding.

  13. Assessments • Pretest • Pretest shows the students what they are expected to know by the end of the lesson. Give them a sneak peek of what you want them to know. Then, they can measure their progress as they learn. • Key terms • Teach the “12 Powerful Words” throughout the year • Performance Based Assessments • Retelling with visuals (Comic) • Completing incomplete stories • Scaffolding • Provide extra time • Reduce amount of work but keep content • Modified text • Grade on quality, not quantity
