  2. The Goal“The Field Education Program at Andover Newton Theological School provides transformational experiential education for ministry.”

  3. The Objectives • Meaningful ministry experiences in settings that support learning • Theological reflection opportunities that foster spiritual formation and vocational discernment • Courses that integrate theory and practice

  4. The Site Provides…Meaningful ministry experiences • Students in field education minister, rather than observe • Determine duties in collaboration with the site, balancing student’s learning goals with site’s ministry opportunities • Begin collaborative process at the interview, continue through “Learning Agreement,” due in October

  5. … in settings that support learning • The “teaching parish” model • Teaching Parish/Site Committees • Sites expect that they are working with student ministers who need • to take risks • to “try on” ministry tasks that are new to them • to reflect on their ministry

  6. The supervisor provides: Theological Reflection • Meet weekly with a trained, approved supervisor • Write a short reflection that lifts up a ministry experience into the light of scripture, tradition, faith • Together, reflect on ministry

  7. Basic Expectations • 15 hours per week • 5 in preparation • 1 in supervision • 0.5 in meetings with TP/SCs • 0.5 in staff time • 8 in ministry tasks • Expected stipend for ANTS sites: $3,000

  8. Integration: P3 • Regular fall and spring semester courses have a P3 designation • Students in required year must take one P3 course each semester of field education • Resident Ministry Practitioner participates in course with full-time faculty member • Practitioner leads break-out section • Sessions scheduled contiguously with course meetings, include group check-in, integration exercises

  9. Credit and Field Education • 1.5 credits per semester for CMFE (Pass/Fail) • 1.5 credits per semester for P3 section (again, Pass/Fail) • 3 credits for P3 course, should be in an area you were already required to pursue • Overall, 6 credits for Field Education alone, plus 3 credits per semester for P3 courses

  12. The Placement Process Involves… • Following intake procedures • Knowing denominational requirements • Exploring opportunities • Interviewing, covenanting

  13. Intake Procedures • Attend Information Session (done!) • Schedule Intake Appointment through Jen Walker, ext. 316, or jwalker@ants.edu • Complete Student Information Form, bring it to Intake • Seek out and contact sites • Interview, match, submit Covenant • Enroll in CMFE course for fall

Options for Sites Include... • Choosing an ANTS site • In many cases ideal • Less translation, more simplicity • Some great sites! • http://www.ants.edu/field-education/ • Borrowing a BTI site • http://www.bostontheological.org/programs/field_education_sites.htm • Initiating a new site, sometimes learning as a staff member: No new sites after June 30!

  15. Strategies for Interviewing Include... • Review site descriptions • Send student information form or resume • Have a two-way conversation • Be honest about goals and expectations • Follow up with sites and interviewers
