  1. The Blue Funk Story (1984-1993)Dedicated to the enduring memory of Shasheesh Prasad(as recalled by Bari, December 2006)

  2. I was already hanging around SPA for a couple of years when Puia, Shasheesh, Abui, Jude, Tankha came into my life (David, John and John’s twin David – who later went on to become possibly the only clergyman who listens to Led Zep – were late ‘joiners’ – Jagan,Candassamy,Sharmila,...…and the others drifted in as we went along….). Bari & Shasheesh outdoors

  3. Prior to this time we did not have any regular or sustained music activity in the campus. So you can imagine when a bunch of guys with the same passion for music get together, life changes. (L to R) Tankha,Jude,Abui,Candassamy,Sharmila,Shasheesh at First Floor West Wing balcony Freshers’ Night came along and there we were on stage, Puia and I playing guitar, Jude trying to work up some rhythm, Abui and Shasheesh singing. The following day we listened to the recording and Abui stopped singing since. The rest of us weren’t so smart.

  4. Puia tuning his electric bass guitar (SRCC open air show) I had a collection of some songs with lyrics and chords, Puia had some other and Shasheesh had a book called ‘The Beatles Complete’ which actually belonged to his sister, Smita (He later made a photocopy of the WHOLE book and gave it to me when he came to Shillong for my marriage). And I still have it.

  5. Kima,Bari,Puia (partially)at a show in an LSR inter-hostel show Armed with these we regularly and religiously worked on the songs, collected new ones and furthered our education. Having gained in confidence, we toyed with the idea of going on stage in front of an unknown audience. The chance presented itself when neighbouring MAMC (Maulana Azad Medical College) held their annual festival and had, among others, a ‘Western Music Competition’.

  6. (L to R)Tankha, Candassamy, Bari, Jude,Abui,Shasheesh at entrance to First Floor ,West Wing We thought we’d go for it and did our homework. We had Jude on drums. Puia on bass, Bari on vocals and guitar, Shasheesh on vocals. We opened with a couple of numbers on which I did the vocals. Shasheesh came on stage, kicked off his chappals, almost tripped over the cables and went into a Rock ‘N’ Roll medley. This stirred the audience up and a group of restless Sardarjis at the back row turned around and looked towards the stage. Right, the first full show ……… was at the courtyard just outside the carpentry workshop.)

  7. Bari,Shasheesh outdoors again I can’t really claim that we changed the world but from this day on the Delhi music circuit actually adopted us and tolerated and accepted whatever we had to offer them. The first full show that we did was at home, in SPA, I can’t remember if it was around this time that we became ‘Blue Funk’, but I remember Tankha coming up with the name. He was looking up a book of synonyms and thought that ‘Blue Funk’ was appropriate. (in our case it loosely translates as ‘stage fright’).

  8. (L to R) Abui,Bari,Candassamy,Tankha,Puia,Shasheesh at the Hostel tennis court You can say that we were selfish right from the very beginning because we never thought of what the audience would like to hear. We were rather more concerned about what we would like to play and - surprise! - everyone that evening went along with it.  Our biggest handicap was that I coul never and still can not do guitar solos and we were doing songs that needed a good guitar player. Because of this we had to search for guitar players outside of SPA and the guys who helped us in this, at different periods – were Muankima, Lanu and Zairia, in that order.

  9. Shasheesh on acoustic guitar ,SPA auditorium Along the way and over the years we played at a number of College festivals, most of them at DU (Delhi University) colleges.

  10. (L to R) Puia,Bari,Tankha,Shasheesh,Abui,Jude,Candassamy enjoying the winter sun Time passed. We graduated. We all went back home. Became architects….….

  11. Shasheesh on stage (SPA) In 1993 some thoughtful soul instigated the idea that Blue Funk should have the decency to say ‘goodbye’ with a full show.   So there we were again, Jude has gone back to Sri Lanka. So we brought in Sam from Shillong. Zairia from Aizawl played guitar for us.   And as usual we started the show with me on vocals. After a number of songs, Shasheesh came on stage, kicked off his shoes, almost tripped over the cables and launched into his Rock ‘N’ Roll repertoire.
