In this lab activity, students will create a timeline of Earth's history scaled to an adding machine tape. The scale of 1 millimeter equals 1 million years allows the conversion of Earth's age, approximately 4.6 billion years, into a measurable length of 4.6 meters. Students will carefully cut the tape, dividing it into six major geological eras: Cenozoic, Mesozoic, Paleozoic, Proterozoic, Archean, and Hadean. Each era will be marked and noted based on its chronological extent, fostering an understanding of geological time.

Convert Time To Tape Distance • Scale: 1 millimeter = 1 million years • Age of Earth = 4.6 billion years old • 4.6 billion = 4,600 million • 4,600 million years = 4,600 millimeters • 1,000 millimeter = 1 meter • 4,600 millimeters = 4.6 meters The adding machine tape should be EXACTLY 4.6 meters long
Examples To Get You Familiar 2 meters • 2 billion years = 10 millimeters = 1 centimeter • 500 million years = • 100 million years = • 55 million years = 500 millimeters or 50 centimeters 100 millimeters or 10 centimeters 55 millimeters or 5.5 centimeters
Day 1 • Measure and cut adding tape correctly • Divide tape into six eras/eons WITH PEN • Roll up tightly and give to me • Write names of group members on back Remember Cenezoic = 0 - 65mya (0-6.5cm) Mesozoic = 65mya – 248mya (0-24.8cm) Paleozoic = 248mya – 543mya (0-54.3cm) Proterozoic = 543mya – 2,500mya (0-2.5m) Archean = 2,500mya – 3,800mya (0-3.8m) Hadean = 3,800mya – 4,600mya
Day 2 • Make sure your timeline format looks like this: Remember: Cenezoic = 0 - 65mya (0-6.5cm) Mesozoic = 65mya – 248mya (0-24.8cm) Paleozoic = 248mya – 543mya (0-54.3cm) Proterozoic = 543mya – 2,500mya (0-2.5m) Archean = 2,500mya – 3,800mya (0-3.8m) Hadean = 3,800mya – 4,600mya
