Active Transport • Requires energy • Moving large molecules • Pumps • Moving ions against their concentration gradients • Low to high • Very common for Potassium (K+) and Sodium (Na+)
Endocytosis vs. Exocytosis • Cells need a way to take in and get rid of large molecule or particles that cannot pass through the membrane • Endo - Cell membrane extends out around the particle to take it in • Exo – Vesicles meet the cell membrane to discharge materials; get them out
3 Types of Endocytosis • Phagocytosis • Food • Pinocytosis • Liquid • Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis • Uses the Receptor Proteins • Specific molecules only!
Endocytosis • All three types form vesicles which carry the materials into the cell
Exocytosis • Getting materials out of the cell
