Start- ing with two seats in 1984, the party gained in numbers over the years. Simultaneously , the Congress began losing its political space. The party has 303 members in the present Lok Sabha, while the Congress which had 426 members in 1984 now has only 52. Five years later in 1989 BJP’s numbers jumped to 85 and then it hit a century with 120 seats in 1991. Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani, who brought Ayodhya issue to the centre-stage with his rath yatra and helped propel the party to power in 1996 with 161 seats, can be partly credited with this success. The BJP now dominates the country’s political landscape with no rival to meas- ure up its challenge. In 2014 with Naren- dra Modi and Amit Shah at the party’s helm and the old guard relegated to the sidelines, the BJP emerged as a new pow- erhouse. Five years later, in 2019, the duo demonstrated their leadership qualities and political acumen by sweeping the polls. Monday marked the Foundation Day of the party but the mood at the BJP headquarters in Delhi was sombre in view of Covid-19 pan- demic sweeping the country . With the number of active cases and deaths rising and social distancing firmly in place, the party decided to shun celebrations. The Prime Minister’s tweet summed it up: “We mark our Party’s 40th Anniversary when India is battling COVID-19. I appeal to BJP Karykartas to follow the set of guidelines from our Par- ty President @ JPNadda ji, help those in need and ensure social distancing. Let’s make India COVID-19 free. #BJP@40. Thanking the workers for their hard work which helped the party riding to power, the prime minister also issued a set of five guide- lines for them to follow: 1. Help those who are struggling for basic needs. 2. Make cloth face masks at home and distribute them to five- seven persons. 3. Run campaign to thank doc- tors, nurses, health workers, policemen, bank officials, safai workers and others involved in essential services. 4. Urge the people to peo- ple to install Aarogya Setu app which would inform them about the infected cases in their vicinity and 5. Contribute to PM CARES Fund and also motivate others for support in this unprecedented situation which the PM likened to a war-time effort. The idea behind these guidelines was to con- nect with the people in this hour of darkness. It is this bond that is expected to take the party , which is accused of communal and hate politics, forward in the future. Ideol- ogy has brought the BJP this far, just as a weak leadership has pushed the Congress back. PM CARES is, therefore, the obvious next step. T his is the new name of the House Journal Society (HJS) of the LBS National Academy of Administration, and though I had alluded to it in my last col- umn, the contents of the jour- nal are so interesting that I thought of sharing these with a wider readership. Lalitaditya Neelam, the editor explains the rationale for the change of name : ‘Three.one.one’. is a reminder to the Officer Trainees that the Constitu- tional protections that we enjoy as civil servants place a responsibility upon us to serve the nation with Hon- esty, Integrity, Dedication and Devotion by standing up for the right values and laws, without any fear or favour… we must carry forward the idea that we are all crea- tures of Law, and hence will always strive to uphold the Rule of Law, and make our nation truly great. The name was suggested by P Promoth, and his comments are also quite pithy: for all the protection that this Article (311) offers us, it is our duty that we recognize it, and re- member it with sincerity and gratitude… it is not a regular name, it is unassuming and dull at first glance. On reading the magazine’s name an Of- ficer Trainee may have to double think to connect to the Article and that is pre- cisely why the rechristening is required : to pay a debt of remembrance to Article 311. In the column, Bureaucrat to Know about, Team HJS (Lalita- ditya, Chitra, Akash, Srushti, Pradeep, Lakshmi Dilkhush) pays a tribute to the legendary SR Sankaran for his efforts to abolish bonded labour and manual scavenging, and for ensuring distribution of land and a humane governance system for tribes. While the origins of this trend can be traced to the 15th-century Spanish court, these voluminous skirts be- came a marker of class in the 18th century . Only those privileged enough to avoid household chores could wear them; you needed a house with enough space to be able to comfortably move from room to room, along with a servant to help you put it on. The bigger your skirt, the higher your status. In the 1850s and 1860s, more middle-class women started wearing the crino- line as caged hoop skirts started being mass-pro- duced. Soon, “Crinoline- mania” swept the fashion world. Despite critiques by dress reformers who saw it as another tool to op- press women’s mobility and freedom, the large hoop skirt was a sophis- ticated way of maintain- ing women’s social safe- ty . The crinoline mandated that a potential suitor – or, worse yet, a stranger – would keep a safe distance from a woman’s body and cleavage. Although these skirts probably inadvertently helped mitigate the dangers of the era’s smallpox and cholera outbreaks, crino- lines could be a health haz- ard: Many women burned to death after their skirts caught fire. By the 1870s, the crinoline gave way to the bustle, which only em- phasized the fullness of the skirt on the posterior. In between are the two y any reasonable critical analysis, The Sound of Mu- sic is a terrible movie. With its im- plausible screen- play, terrible act- ing, and sugar-shock mawk- ishness, it has all the ear- marks of something that, despite its initial burst of popularity , would be forgot- ten by the passage of time. Yet, more than 50 years after its American premiere, the film is not only remembered but has settled into the #3 slot for all-time (inflation- adjusted) box office receipts. For many years after its the- atrical run, The Sound of Music was a television sta- ple, a guaranteed ratings- grabber. In the home video era, it has become a peren- nial best-seller, with new releases every 5-to-10 years (to capitalize on anniversa- ries). It carries the label of a “beloved classic” – a desig- nation no one, not even the most curmudgeonly critic, is going to dispute. The film version of The Sound of Music was an ad- aptation of the Rogers & Hammerstein show, which opened in 1959 and starred Mary (mother of Larry Hagman) Martin. Although the producers originally tabbed William Wyler to direct, Wyler’s in- volvement ended early in pre-production reins were handed to Robert Wise, who unexpectedly be- came available. Re-united with his West Side Story screenwriter, Lehman, Wise aggressively “opened up” the play, em- ploying significant location shooting in Salzburg, Aus- tria and allowing the 70 mm format to capture some spectacular shots of the lo- cale. He also attempted (with limited success) to (Charmian mer in their minority as- sessment of the film, I per- ceive its strengths. The cin- ematography is beguiling, the songs are uplifting, and Andrews deserves praise and adoration she has received through the years. As for the movie as whole…suffice it to say that its power is entirely emo- tional. Like many crowd- pleasers that rely on nostal- gia and manipulation, it works only if you are caught up in its magic. Those not ensnared in that web will recognize the artifice. For most viewers, The Sound of Music is effective and affect- ing – its revenue-generating power and enduring popu- larity are not to be gainsaid. But I must voice a rare dis- sent. Although I acknowl- edge that many treasure the film like no other, I have at best mixed feelings about The Sound of Music and cannot add my voice to the seemingly-universal chorus labeling it as a masterpiece. a tide of exuberance that crests with an emotional high. The songs, which have become part of the Ameri- can musical lexicon, are im- mediately recognizable and, as Kael sarcastically ac- knowledged, hummable. (It’s no surprise that there’s a sing-along ver- sion available.) Then there’s Julie Andrews. Coming to The Sound of Music off Mary Poppins (which hadn’t yet been released), Andrews immersed herself in the role. Her sunny disposition, powerful voice, and pure charisma dominate the movie and, at least during the musical sequences, dis- pel the cynical impulse. (Christopher Plummer is another matter. He famous- ly disliked the movie to the point where he not only lat- er referred to it as The Sound of Mucus but appar- ently had to be “liquored up” to film his scenes. It shows in his performance, which doesn’t represent a career highlight.) Loosely based on the real- life exploits of the Von Trapp singers, a family of folk performers who at- tained worldwide promi- nence before, dur- ing, and after World War II, The Sound of Music fiction- alizes all but the bones details of the histori- cal record. This caused a clash between Wise and the real-life Maria Von Trapp (played in the film by Julie Andrews), who there to be “more truth” in the movie. The film, written and directed by Blunt’s ac- tor-filmmaker husband John Krasinski, was originally set to hit the big screen in late March, but was among numerous Hollywood films de- layed amid the novel coronavirus pandemic and unprec- edented theater closures. On March 13, Krasinski had shared the news of the delay through a post on Twitter. Krasinski wrote: “One of the things I’m most proud of is that people have said our movie is one you have to see all together Well, due to the every-changing circumstances of what’s going on in the world around us, now is clearly not the right time to do that. “ As insanely excited as we are for all of you to see this movie... I’m gonna wait to release the film til we CAN all see it together! So here’s to our group movie date! See you soon!” The Paramount movie is a sequel to the 2018 silent blockbuster ‘ A Quiet Place’. It was about a post-apocalyptic world where hu- mans are the prey of fast-moving creatures who track victims by sound. The 2018 film revolved around a family struggling to survive in a world where making the slight- est sound draws the attention of a predatory alien species that has taken over the planet. —IANS ‘A QUIET PLACE’ Emily Blunt Appreciating little things M lockdown. Speaking on the Junkfood Cinema podcast, Cargill said: “The interesting thing that Hollywood’s starting to find out is that a lot of the actresses out there want to be superhe- roes as much as the actors do. I know this happened with Scott. He went to Jessica Chastain to get her on Doctor Strange because we were considering her ...
