GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS • Listed in the Graduation Notification Agreement • Must earn all credits in Courses needed for graduation to participate in Graduation ceremony. • Graduation – June 5th at Timmons Arena at 2 pm • Grad Practice at BRHS: TBA • Grad Practice at Timmons: June 4th at 9 am Students must attend both practices to participate in Graduation Ceremony

  4. YOUR PLANS • Work or Military • 2-year school • Includes 2 year ‘University Transfer’ option • 4- year school • Includes additional requirements

  5. DESTINATION: WORK OR MILITARY • Military – speak with recruiters when they visit during lunch • Plan to take the ASVAB • Derek Wells is our Career Specialist • Co-ops, Internships and Job Shadowing • Job Interview Skills • Resume Preparation

  6. DESTINATION: Two-Year College • Transfer Programs –vs- Career Programs • Take entrance exam required by the school. (Greenville Tech requires COMPASS or ASSET) Check with the college/program to see if other tests are recommended • Speak with Admissions Counselor at the college for details on your program of study

  7. DESTINATION: Four-Year College • Additional classes are required for entrance • 3 lab sciences, • 2 – 3 years of same language, • 1 year Fine Art • Take the college Entrance Exam (ACT or SAT) • Register for Fall Administration by December • Online Registration is preferred

  8. SAT • COST: $50 • Register online at www.collegeboard.com • Send your scores to four colleges with no charge. Select up to 4 schools where you plan to apply. • No more stand-by testing– you must register online before the test • New ID rules apply.

  9. ACT • Cost: ACT No Writing – $35 ACT Plus Writing -- $50.50 • Register at www.actstudent.org • Send your scores to four colleges with no charge. Select up to 4 schools where you plan to apply.

SAT/ACT and COLLEGE WAIVERS • SAT/ACT waivers are available to students with Free/Reduced lunch • 2 waivers per test are available • See your counselor • College Application waivers are available to students who use SAT/ACT waivers • Waives the application fee for some colleges • No Waivers accepted at Greenville Tech, Newberry College, Spartanburg Methodist Colleges

  11. Apply to College • Research Possible Colleges • Internet searches • College Visits • Open Houses • Campus Tours Three days are excused for official college visits. You must complete a College Visit form before your visit to be excused.

  12. Applying to College • Complete an application • On-Line Applications are preferred by Colleges • Don’t let cost keep you from applying • SAT/ACT scores need to be sent directly from the testing center • College Application Day – Nov 2nd – Encourage your child to participate

Transcripts • Complete & return transcript request form in Guidance (allow 2 – 3 business days for processing) • First three transcripts are free, afterwards, the cost is $5 • Pick up sealed transcript from guidance, apply postage, address to college of your choice and put in the mail. Record date you send in the mail. • Send final transcript at the end of the year to the college you plan to attend (No cost)

Deadlines • Watch for Deadlines • Set a personal deadline of Thanksgiving • Most SC schools have rolling admissions. • Clemson notifies students of acceptance by February, if they apply by December 1st • USC notifies students of acceptance by December for Students who apply by October 1st and in March for students who apply by February 1st.

Recommendations • Select colleges ( and many scholarships) will ask for letters of recommendation • Contact your references early– allow at least two weeks to write your letter. • Carefully select references – choose someone who can comment on your positive characteristics. • You will mail your reference letters directly to your college admissions office

College Athletes • If you are planning to participate in competitive college level athletics, you may be required to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse • Registration is on-line at www.eligibilitycenter.org • Register NOW. Registration requires sending your transcript • You must send your final transcript to the Clearinghouse in order to be cleared to play

  18. Federal Financial Aid • Must complete the Free Application for federal Student Aid (FAFSA) • Must apply for a Parent and a student Pin Number • Do your taxes early– You will need for completing FAFSA • www.fafsa.gov • Look for Financial Aid Nights at various schools in the district

State Supported Scholarships • Palmetto Fellows- ($6700 first year; $7500 additional years) • GPA of 3.5 or better • SAT Score of 1200 (Critical Reading & Math) or ACT Score of 24 • Top 6% rank at end of 10th, 11th or 12th grade OR • 4.0 GPA • SAT Score of 1400 (Critical Reading & Math) or ACT score of 32

  20. State Supported Scholarships • Life Scholarship (Up to $5000 per academic year) • 4-Year School • Meet 2 of 3 Criteria • 3.0 GPA • SAT Score of 1100 (CR & Math), or ACT score of 24 • Top 30% rank of graduating class OR • 2-Year School • 3.0 GPA

State Supported Scholarships • HOPE scholarship • Only available at 4 Year schools • 3.0 final GPA • $2800 for 1st academic year (Converts to LIFE Scholarship, if meet criteria) • Lottery Tuition Assistance Program • Only available at 2 year schools • Must complete FAFSA • Award money varies by academic year

How Can Parents help? • Encourage students to check their student emails and announcements regularly • Get your Parent Portal Information to monitor student progress • Speak with teachers and counselors when needed • Record important dates such as when Progress Reports and Report cards are due home

  24. College Application Day • College Application Day is November 2nd • Please encourage your child to participate • There will be representatives from local colleges to assist with the application process
