  1. BRHS Registration 2010-2011

  2. Registration Timeline • Monday – longer advisory to distribute curriculum guide/registration forms and to discuss contents/layout of curriculum guide and registration process. Will meet in afternoon to drop off forms with advisors (teachers). • Tuesday–Friday pick up and drop off registration forms in Advisory (5 min. in the morning and 5 min. in the afternoon). • Friday – tear off white copy of Registration Forms and bring to Student Services. Students will keep the yellow copy for their records.

  3. Graduation Requirements • 4 English • 4 Math (1 of which must be an Algebra credit) • 3 Science (to include a physical science and 1 Biology course) • 3 Social Studies (World History, American History, US Government and Economics) • 1 HOPE • 1 Fine Art • 8 Electives (4 of which must be in a selected major area of interest) • Un-weighted Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher • Passing score on FCAT Reading and Mathematics (10th Grade)

  4. State University College Admission and Bright Futures Requirements Things that are not required for graduation, but are needed for Bright Futures Scholarships and admissions into a four-year University: Algebra II Foreign Language (minimum of two years) Community Service Hours

  5. HOPE Requirement A student can waive the HOPE requirement in one of two ways: 1. Participating in two seasons of an interscholastic sport at the Junior Varsity or Varsity level AND a grade of C or better on the Personal Fitness Competency test. A student is only allowed to sit for this test ONCE. 2. Complete two years in an ROTC class. This will waive the full credit in HOPE and the full credit in Fine Arts.

  6. Fine Art Requirement • A student must complete 1 course in a Fine Art for graduation. • Courses for satisfying the Fine Art requirement include: Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Musical Theatre, Dance, Journalism 1, Commercial Art 1-4, TV Production 1-4, Web Design 1-4, Communication Tech 1-4, Civil Engineering & Architecture, Engineering Design & Dev, Engineering Tech 1-3, Adv. Tech Apps, Intro to Engineering Design, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Drafting 1-4 and Horticulture 3.

  7. Fine Art Requirement • *Some of these courses may no longer be offered at BRHS. • **If a student is using a course to satisfy the Fine Art requirement, they may not also use the same course to satisfy an MAI requirement.

  8. Major Area of Interest (MAI) • An MAI is a group of related courses • Students must successfully complete 4 MAI elective credits for graduation (not necessarily in the same area) • MAI’s can be changed each year • Students will receive a diploma designation if 4 MAI credits are completed in the same area.

  9. Major Areas of Interest (MAI) • It is VERY important to note that a credit used for an MAI elective cannot be used as a credit for a core course. • For example, if a student takes Agriscience Foundations, it CANNOT be counted for both an MAI elective credit AND a science credit!

  11. Can I Change My Academy? • Yes! • It can only be done once per year, during registration • If you are interested in changing your academy, you can do so on the bottom of your registration form • If you do change academies, please be sure to register for classes in your “new” academy.

Registration Guidelines • Study the courses in the curriculum guide and go over possible choices with your teachers as you meet with them during the registration period. • Take the curriculum guide home and discuss your course selections with your parents or guardians. • Write down any questions you have for your teachers and counselor.

Registration Guidelines • Please check the top portion of the registration form to make sure your label is correct. • Select your courses and obtain the appropriate teacher approval/recommendation for any course that is marked with an asterisk (*). This includes bothrequired and elective courses.

  14. Registration Guidelines • Clearly indicate your elective choices by ranking them in priority order. Every effort is made to give you your top choices; however, if there is a scheduling conflict alternate course selections must be made. • If you do not choose alternate courses, one or more will be selected for you and will not be changed at a later date.

  15. Registration Guidelines • Sign your registration form. • On a daily basis, you will meet in advisory to pick up and drop off your registration form. • Registration forms must be completed by February 26th.

  16. Schedule Changes • Students are expected to honor their commitments and to attend and complete the courses for which they register during the registration period.

  17. Schedule Changes • Requests for schedule changes, therefore, will be considered only for the following reasons: 1. The student has already earned credit for the course. 2. The student has failed to meet the prerequisite for the course. 3. The student is scheduled for too many or not enough courses. 4. If there was a clerical error.

  18. What is a Prerequisite? • A prerequisite course is a course that is required to be taken prior to the course that you want to enroll in. • For example, for a student to enroll in a Horticulture course, they must first complete the Agriscience Foundations course.

  19. Dual Enrollment Criteria • Have an un-weighted cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. • Counselor and Principal recommendation is required. • Have an acceptable score (determined by SCF) on the SAT, ACT or College Placement Test (CPT). • If a student does not have an SAT/ACT score, they must take the CPT at SCF.

  20. Dual Enrollment Criteria • Students are required to enroll in a full (seven classes) schedule of combined high school and dual-enrolled classes. • Students should be academically motivated to accept the challenge of college level work • Student must be a junior or senior to dual enroll.

  21. Dual-Enrollment • Students interested in taking dual-enrollment courses must work closely with their high school counselor and the dual-enrollment coordinator at SCF to plan their schedule accordingly. • Students interested in taking dual-enrollment courses during the fall term should contact their counselor before June. To take courses during the Spring term, students will need to contact their counselor in early November.

  22. Advanced Placement • Any student who is interested in taking an Advanced Placement (AP) course must have approval by the teacher. • Any course not approved by a teacher must have a parent override.

  23. Advanced Placement • Submitting a registration form with Teacher authorization or parent override for an AP course will enroll you in that course. If a scheduling conflict arises you will contacted by BRHS guidance or administration staff. • Therefore, submitting a completed registration form requires you to complete any AP summer assignments on time for submission on the first day of school.

  24. Overrides • If you or your parent disagree with a teacher’s recommendation, you may request an Override Permission Form. • Both you and your parent or guardian must sign this form. If you are then placed in the class, you MUST remain in that class for the ENTIRE year, regardless of the grade earned.

  25. Overrides • Override forms should be completed and returned no later than March 5th. • Override forms can be found in Student Services or on the BRHS website.

  26. Registration Forms • Please complete the registration form in pen and press down firmly to ensure the second copy is readable. • Please make sure you write down your home phone number and an alternate phone number on your registration form. • We need this information in the event there is a course cancellation or conflict with your schedule. • Please write any numbers legibly so they can be easily read by the counselors.

  27. Registration Forms • Carefully select the courses in which you would like to register. • If there is an asterisk (*) by the course, you must get the teacher’s approval and have them initial by the specific course.

  28. Registration Forms • When choosing electives, please list them in numerical order with #1 being the most desired course in your major. #2-6 should also be clearly ranked, and can be any elective course or in any academy. • Please understand that if you do not select enough courses to fill your schedule, courses will be chosen for you and will not be changed!

  29. Course Failure • If a student has failed a course, they will not be scheduled back into that course at BRHS. • Students must register through Florida Virtual School to recover a credit (www.flvs.net). • Students need to obtain approval from their guidance counselor before they can begin the course.

  30. Experiential Education Course • This course provides the student with knowledge and skills of effective teaching and teacher responsibilities in a variety of areas – it is NOT a student aide course. • Students interested in becoming a teacher can enroll in this course as a junior or a senior. • GPA of a 2.5 or higher

  31. Experiential Education Courses • No major discipline (OSS, multiple ISS) • Applications may be picked up in Student Services. • Applications must be returned with registration forms on February 26th.

  32. Peer Counseling Courses • This is a teacher/student aide position. • It enables students to develop basic knowledge and skills in communication, meeting human needs, and conflict resolution. • GPA of a 2.5 or higher • No major discipline (OSS, multiple ISS, etc).

  33. Peer Counseling Courses • Applications are available in student services. • Applications must be returned with registration forms by February 26th.

  34. Manatee Technical Institute • Students must take the TABE Test prior to entry into MTI. • Any student who is interested in attending MTI must get approval from their guidance counselor so that appropriate schedule adjustments can be made • Students must be 16 years of age and have an un-weighted cumulative GPA of 2.0.

  35. OJT (On-the-Job Training) • Students must have a job prior to registering for the course. • Students must have teacher approval and must complete an OJT application. • Ag or Business OJT students have to be employed in their fields. • DCT OJT students can be employed in any field and must be in a DCT course.

  36. OJT • Students must be a junior or senior to enroll in an OJT course. • OJT courses are not open enrollment courses; they are done in the fall ONLY. • Students will not be placed in an OJT course for the Spring term only; they must be enrolled in the full-year course.

  37. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can I take more than one PE course? A: Not recommended, but will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  38. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can I change classes at the end of first semester? A: We do not allow for schedule changes at the end of first semester.

  39. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can I be in a major that is not in my academy? A: You may take a course in another academy; however, you must be enrolled in an MAI course in your academy.

  40. Frequently Asked Questions Q: I only need 3 credits to graduate, can I be placed into a Study Hall? A: Sorry, no Study Hall courses are offered at BRHS per county policy!

  41. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Do I have to bring my registration form back? A: No…simply keep the yellow copy for your records; we have the original copy (white) on file!
