L’Imparfait USAGE • DESCRIPTION (physique, de caractère, de temps, d’heure, etc.) • > Il pleuvait, c’étaitbien. - It was raining, it was great. • > Quand elle avait 5 ans, elle était grande pour son âge. • DURÉE DANS LE PASSÉ • > Elle travaillaitdans un bureau. - She used to work in an office. • HABITUDE : USED TO BE LIKE • > Il allaitau cinéma tous les samedi. - He used to go to the movies every Saturday. • USED TO HAPPEN FREQUENTLY IN THE PAST • > Elle trichaiten maths. - She used to always cheat in math. • ACTION DANS LE PASSÉ ET INTERROMPUE • > Elle mangeaitquand tout à coup le téléphone a sonné. - She was eating when all of a sudden the phone rang.

  5. PASSÉ-COMPOSÉ 1. WHAT WAS COMPLETED: a completed action or something that happened for a specified time period. Nous sommes arrivés à huit heures. We arrived at eight o’clock. Il a mangé à Paris une fois. He ate in Paris one time. 2. WHAT CHANGED. a change in a condition of state of being at a precise moment in time. Watch for expressions like tout à coup (all of a sudden), soudain (suddenly), une fois (once), and un jour (one day). Soudain, j’ai eufaim.                 Suddenly, I got hungry. Tout à coup, j’ai compris. All of a sudden, I understood. 3. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT: the sequence of events in a narration. Many times equivalent to English simple past. Elles ont décidé d’aller diner. Elles sont sorties. Elles ont trouvé un restaurant et elles y sont entrées. The decided to go eat. They went out. They found a restaurant and went in. IMPARFAIT 1. HOW THINGS USED TO BE: repeated or habitual actions. Watch out for words like chaque (each, every). J’allais en France chaque été. I used to go to France each summer. Nous prenions nos vacances en juin. We took our vacation in June (habitually). 2. WHAT SOMEONE OR SOMETHING WAS LIKE OR HOW ONE FELT: physical or mental conditions and states. Il avaitfaim. He was hungry. Je ne comprenais pas. I didn’tunderstand. 3. WHAT WAS GOING ON: description of the scene or setting. Sometimes equivalent to past progressive in English. Il pleuvait. It was raining. Elle dormait. She was sleeping. Il était dix heures. It wastwoo’clock. Je regardait (imparfait) la television quand ma mère est rentrée (passé composé). I was watching television when my mother got home.
