  2. Why 40 days • Jesus was driven by the spirit into the desert for 40 day….. (Luke 4:1-2) • Catholic have 40 days because Jesus went into the desert for 40 days • There he prayed and fasted and then was tempted by the devil.

  3. Old testament • Other significance of the number 40 in the old testament • “It rained for 40 day while Noah was in the ark” Genesis 7:12 • “Moses was on Mt. Sinai for 40 days receiving the 10 commandments and the law from god.” Exodus 34: 28-39 • “The Israelites wonder in the desert for 40 years after they were freed from bondage in Egypt and were headed for the “Promised Land.” Joshua 5-6

  4. So it makes sense for us to give up chocolate for 40 days…..Right? What is the connection? • It’s a great time to pray about where we need to me “made new” in our lives • We discipline ourselves during lent for 40 days so that at Easter we can celebrate not only Christ's victory but our victory in taking one step closer to sainthood.
