  1. Night Night is the account of a Jewish boy’s horrific experiences during World War II. It is Elie Wiesel’s memoir and history ofthe Holocaust, the name given to the persecution and murder of millions of Jews and others during World War II.

Night is Nonfiction:prose writing dealing with reality (people, events, places, and ideas) A.Types of Nonfiction 1.Exposition – explains, gives info, defines (news reports) 2.Description – creates a mood or emotion, re-creates a person, place, thing, event, or idea (travel writing) 3.Persuasion – aims at convincing a reader to think or act in a certain way (editorials , opinion columns, movie reviews) 4.Narration – tells a story (biography) a. Autobiography – recounts an author’s entire life b.Memoir – focuses on a specific aspect, short period of time, or specific theme of an author’s life The most popular forms of nonfiction are the memoir, biography, and autobiography (and maybe the essay).

  3. II. The Author – Elie Wiesel A. Born (1928) / Raised in Sighet, Hungary B.Jewish boy / Thought of becoming a Rabbi C. As a teenager, experienced Nazi death camps (deported May 1944) D. Rescued April 1945 from a German concentration camp E.Moved to Paris, began career as a journalist (lived with two surviving sisters) F. Eventually moved to the US (teaches at Boston University) Besides Night, Elie Wiesel has written many novels…The Town Beyond the Wall , The Accident, The Testament, The Gates of the Forest, The Fifth Son, A Beggar in Jerusalem, and Dawn.

  4. Auschwitz Auschwitz, where Elie Wiesel was sent, was Nazi Germany’s largest concentration camp. “Undesirables” from all over Europe arrived almost daily. By the end of the Holocaust, over six million Jews had been killed.

To what they bear witness?) 3.Father-Son Relationships (How does Elie’s relationship with his father develop? Other fathers and sons?) 4.Loss of Faith (How does Elie’s faith in God change as his experiences in the book progress?) 5.Voice vs. Silence (Who has a voice and who chooses to remain silent?)
