Types of Financial Aid Sources of Financial Aid • Federal (given based on the # of people in your home & family income) • State (given based on gpa and family income) • College (given based on gpa, need and desire to recruit your demographic or major) • Private • Family • Gift Aid (Don’t have to pay back) • Grants • Scholarships • Self Help Study • Work Study (job on campus in which some of your pay goes to pay for college) • Loans (pay back in monthly payments 6 months after you graduate college)

  3. How to Apply for Financial Aid

  4. Apply for Financial Aid Early • The first day you can apply for federal and state aid is--January 1st2014. • Students who apply near the end of the application timeframe will receive less money. • Apply Early! The deadline is March 2nd.

  5. Pay Attention to the Important Deadlines • Most California public institutions, as well as some private institutions, use the March 2nd deadline as a “Priority filing” deadline for federal and state aid. March 2nd

  6. Types of Applications Necessary for Applying for Financial Aid • FAFSA: www.fafsa.ed.gov • Federal aid, some state aid, some campus based aid • CA Grant: school provides form • Private Applications • Private scholarships

Financial Aid Application Advice for Students & Parents • Watch for filing deadlines • Apply early, and apply often • Keep photocopies and obtain certificates of mailing • Make sure at least one California school is listed on the FAFSA (questions #87-97) • Make sure CA Grant is signed and submitted by the student’s high school

Scholarships • A scholarship is money for college that you will not be expected to repay. • Designated for students who fit a particular profile (from the college's home state, holding a specified grade average, enrolling in a particular major or bringing special talent in athletics, music, and the like).

Scholarships cont. • Other outside scholarships may be available to students whose parents work for a particular company or to students who are eligible for scholarships sponsored by church or club organizations. • Check with each college to see what scholarships are available. • Find out if any scholarships available through your company or community. • Ask your counselor for scholarship lists. • Perform searches on the Internet. • Pay attention to scholarship requirements and application deadlines.

Scholarshipscont. • *If you fall under these qualities, there is a scholarship for you: • Learning disability of some kind • Abuse • Divorce • Poverty • Exceptionally tall or short • Being an organ donor • Being left handed • Being a skateboarder • Foster child now or ever • Homeless now or ever The more scholarships you apply to, the better your chances of getting one!

  13. Where to look for scholarships • Scholarship Books • Online scholarship bases • Google any major corporation and do a search on its website • for a scholarship. Examples are McDonalds,Verizon, etc. • Your High School Counseling Office • The college or university you plan to apply • Your community • Your church • Your parents’ place of employment • Get on Mrs. Durkee’s email list—she will email you directly • Special Note: Most scholarships are offered again and again • every year. If the deadline you see is old, contact them and • ask if the scholarship is available for this year.
