  2. Eutrophication • When it occurs naturally • Bodies of water gradually age and become more productive. • Takes thousands of years to develop. • Today • Overabundance of nutrients and wastes has increased this process at an alarming rate.

Today’s Eutrophication • A condition in which an aquatic ecosystem contains a high nutrient concentration (mainly phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon nutrients), which stimulates blooms of algae to occur. • Overgrowth of algae blocks sunlight to reach aquatic plant species below this “carpet” of algae and die off. • Bacteria feed on dead matter and increase in number • This in turn causes oxygen depletion, and other aquatic species may be choked out (fish kills)

  4. How ? • Humans add excessive amounts of plant nutrients to streams and lakes in various ways. • Runoff from agricultural fields, field lots, urban lawns, and golf courses are a source for these nutrients. • Untreated, or partially-treated, domestic sewage is another major source.

  6. Objectives • To observe the effect of three fertilizer concentrations on terrestrial plants, and aquatic environments. • To use this information for the Analysis of Eutrophication Project Data, and the Eutrophication Project Paper

To Do • Set up the terrestrial plant portion of the experiment • Observations of both environments will done weekly (Record on tables on pg 9 and 17) • Each bench will have an assigned duty and measurement to record. • Record soil and water quality pre-treatment data • Follow Eutrophication instructions from web site

Terrestrial Bean plant (Vicia faba) 2 seeds 4 pots/treatment Fertilizer (liquid) Predetermined amount Potting Soil Standard commercial mix Lighting 16L:8D photoperiod Aquatic Algae (Oedogonium sp.) Three aquaria: Each has a pre-weighed amount of algae Covers allow fertilizer to drain in to each tank Access holes to retrieve water samples and conduct water quality measurements Set Up

  10. Treatments • Aquarium 1: No fertilizer (Control) • Aquarium 2: Low fertilizer (25% of recommended concentration) Aquarium 3: High fertilizer (100% of recommended concentration)

Protocol • Planting (our lab) • 4pots/aquarium, 2 seeds/pot (thinned out later) • Pre-treatment (supervisor) • Soil quality (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, and pH) • Water nutrients ( Nitrate, Nitrite, and Phosphorus) • Weekly • Adding fertilizer and watering (supervisor) • Plan height (our lab) • DO, conductivity, temperature, OD, pH (our lab) • Post-treatment • Soil quality and water nutrient final measurements (our lab)
