  2. Why new Data Center? • Old Data Center not secure enough • Wooden ceiling • Has water pipes • Too long wait for a new building • The need has been discussed for many years • Too expensive to upgrade the old building

  3. New Data Center • External partner: Basis • ISO 27001 Certified • PCI-DSS • Hosts many companies • Alþingi owns the hardware • Has it own “server rack”

  4. The migration planning • The planning and preparation took some months • Deciding which hardware should be moved • Move servers into virtual servers • Consolidate data that should be moved onto one SAN • Connection

  5. Connections • Between Alþingi and Basis • Primary connection through “Dark Fiber” (1Gb/s) • Secondary connection through IP 100Mb/s • Internet connection via Basis

  6. Traffic from January

  7. Storage Area Network • EMC (26TB)-> IBM (16TB) • Storage solution from EMC was left behind • New storage solution from IBM installed • All servers using SAN need to talk to IBM SAN • All data relevant data moved to IBM SAN solution (8TB) • EMC still used for security cameras recordings (12TB)

  8. Servers • Before moving to Basis • Moving most servers Xen(virtual server) • VMware virtual servers moved to Xen • 8 physicals servers moved • Sun x1 • Xen (SuperMicro) x1 with 36 virtual servers • Linux x5 • Windows x1

  9. Servers left behind • IBM DataBladeCenter • Some physical servers • Mostly related to • Security (video servers, access servers, lights servers) • Encoder for live broadcasting and VOD • Audio recording

  10. Also left behind • Telephone station • Network switches • The fiber cable connection

  11. The moving plan • Saturday • Start at 6:00 - shutdown servers and start packing • Truck arrives at 7:30 • Police escort at 8:30 • Unpacking starts at 9:00, servers booted when ready • Testing if everything works at 11:00 • Sunday • Employees at Basis and Alþingi should be standby

  15. Experience so far • Mostly running smoothly • One major incident in May • Earthquake • Problems in one aluminum smelter • Leads to power surge in the national power system
