Career Planning • My Personality Type: • 30 Minute Analysis • Results will identify a list of careers and majors that match your student’s personality. • Each career is matched to the Bureau of Labor Statistics to provide them with: • Detailed job specifications • Education / Certifications needed • Salary • And much, much more! • There are also a list of majors that are correlated with the careers, and when clicked will provide a list of colleges with that major.

How Do I Access Naviance? • The answer is simple: www.connection.naviance.com/msspa • Once you access this link, you will need to register OR if you are a returning visitor you can sign in using your e-mail & password. • First time users will need to register using a code assigned to students and parents by their counselor (See the card Ms. Wolf gave you)

Application & Fee Essays (if required) Having ACT/SAT scores sent to colleges Getting Teacher to complete recommendation letter (provide a stamped, addressed envelope) Requesting a transcript, midyear report and final transcript as needed via Naviance Verifying that all information, including transcript, arrived at the admissions office Bringing any School or Counselor forms to Ms. Wolf You are responsible for:

  23. MSSPA is responsible for: • Sending requested transcripts within 2 weeks of request date • Including Counselor or School form if one is provided by the student

  24. Transcripts • $4 each • Must be requested on Naviance’s Family Connection • Includes Mid-Year and Final Transcripts • Students will be billed in the spring • Fees will be collected, and Final Transcript requests will be added as part of Senior Check-Out

  25. Mid-Year Transcripts • Common Application requires mid-year transcripts • Some schools may ask for more data to make an admit decision and therefore request mid-year transcripts • Request mid-year transcripts via Naviance – check the “Mid-Year Transcript” box

Final Transcripts • A final transcript will need to be sent only to the school you have decided to attend • You will make your request for this transcript as part of the Senior Check-Out/Diploma pick-up process. • Colleges may choose to revoke admission decisions if a student’s grades have dropped or the student has taken courses other than what they reported on their application – so beware!

Teacher Recommendations • Choose a teacher who “knows you”, not just one whose class you got an “A” in. • Ask teachers for letters early so they have time to create a well-written letter. • Provide teachers with a stamped, addressed envelope. • Check back with teachers to verify that they have indeed written and mailed the requested letters.

College Admissions Testing • Students must register to take the ACT and/or SAT I. • To see dates and register for tests: • SAT www.collegeboard.com • ACT www.actstudent.org • SAT Subject Tests (SAT II):A few colleges require SAT Subject Tests. These are offered only a few times each year. It is your responsibility to check with your colleges to see what (if any) specific tests they require. • MSSPA High School CEEB Code: 241-157

  30. A Few College Quirks • Most schools look for a MINIMUM of two years of foreign language • Change of Program: Notify colleges if you make changes to core classes after you have applied and/or been admitted

  31. Timeline

  32. April - June • Take the ACT or SAT Tests • Start making a list of colleges you like • Do research on those schools to see if they match your wants and needs • Do school visits if you are able • Select teachers who you will ask to write recommendations

  33. Early Summer • Narrow your list of schools to a manageable number • Take a look at last year’s application to see what kinds of items were required – Essays? How many? Letters of recommendation? Porfolios? Inteviews?

August • Register to retake ACT/SAT/Subject Tests • Finalize your list of colleges & their app deadlines • Finalize teacher/counselor recommendation requests (fill out a request sheet so your teacher has all the info at hand to write your letter) • Start working on your application essay • Research scholarships

September • Prepare Early Decision/Early Action applications and turn them in well in advance of deadlines • Polish your application essay • Visit with College Representatives when they visit Main Street • Complete the CSS Profile Form if your colleges require it for application or financial aid • Attend the National College Fair • Attend College Receptions

  36. October • Continue submitting applications – for schools with rolling deadlines, the earlier you submit an application, the less competition your application will face. • The last ACT that will return scores in time to meet most deadlines is offered in October.

  37. November • Thanksgiving should be your drop dead date for turning in applications. • Keep working on finding scholarship opportunities. December • Pick up Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in Post Grad or go to www.fafsa.ed.gov
