Welcome to Year 4. Our motto for the year is: ‘To be the best you can be.’ Developing independence is one of our main aims. Reading. It’s official, reading is good for you!. Reading is great for expanding children’s vocabulary. It also helps to improve spelling & grammar!

  1. Welcome to Year 4 Our motto for the year is: ‘To be the best you can be.’ Developing independence is one of our main aims.

  2. Reading It’s official, reading is good for you! Reading is great for expanding children’s vocabulary. It also helps to improve spelling & grammar! A good reader is often a good writer

  3. This is what we’re doing in school • Guided reading • Reading comprehension • Reading buddies • Individual, partner and group reading activities Over to you! • Reading aloud brings the text to life! • Sharing books with children shows them that reading is cool • You can tackle books they might not choose themselves • It’s a chance to chat about the story (comprehension skills, checking out new vocabulary and much, much more)

  4. Heading towards independent reading... • Encourage your child to read every day and ask them questions about what they’ve read. • Read a variety of texts (not just school books) and make sure you re-visit those old favourites – it’s great for expression and fluency. Don’t forget: • Look for clues in the illustrations • Sound words out, chunk if necessary • Look out for familiar words • Most importantly, try to have fun!

Maths in Years 4 • New Curriculum – higher expectations (times tables, fractions, decimals) • Exposure to a variety of different calculation strategies • Children are expected to know their times tables up to 12x12 by the end of year four • Problem-solving and explaining ideas • Levels tests – at least fortnightly, timetable permitting!

  6. How you can help your child with maths • Maths skills are essential • Cooking (measuring quantities of ingredients), reading the time, paying and calculating change in a shop. • Help them learn their times tables. • Key instant recall facts (KIRFS) are the new fun thing to do.

  7. Topics year 4 cover… In Humanities we will be looking at the Romans and Anglo Saxons in History and in Geography we will be looking at the Local Area, and Denmark (this links to the Anglo Saxons) In Science we will be studying Electricity, Sound, States of Matter, Animals (including humans), Living Things and their Habitats. For Music we will be learning the Ukulele and doing plenty of singing for the Easter Show.

  9. READING JOURNAL HOMEWORK We will expect 2 good quality entries a week. One short task and one long task These support comprehension skills reading is more than decoding!

  10. Homework Reading Journal – 2 tasks a week (due in on Tuesday) We will set homework on a weekly basis which could support our class work in Literacy, Maths, Humanities or Science The outcome will vary it will not always be a written outcome. Reading – Daily (with an adult if possible Times Tables – Daily (these are a priority this year)

  11. Online Safety • Internet access in school is filtered – please ensure that you monitor your child’s Internet access at home and check that privacy settings are set to the highest level • Have a look at the CEOP website for more support. • Apps to be aware of • A quick video to finish
