  14. Bible Lesson Luke 1 The Birth of John the Baptist Zechariah Elizabeth Gabriel John

  15. Luke 1   In the time of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth.

  16. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands. But they had no children because Elizabeth could not conceive, and they were both very old.

  17. Once when Zechariah was serving as priest before God, he was chosen to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

  18.   Then an angel of the Lord appeared. When Zechariah saw him, he was afraid. But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard.”

  19. “Your wife Elizabeth will give you a son, and you are to call him John.

  20. He will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. He will prepare the people for the Lord.”

  21. Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

  22. The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I was sent to tell you this good news. Now you will not be able to speak until this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true.”

  23. The people outside were waiting for Zechariah and wondered why he stayed so long in the temple. When he came out, he could not speak.

  25. They understood that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he made signs to them with his hands.

  26. Elizabeth did conceive a child, and was filled with great joy.

  27. When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son.

  28. The people though the child would be called Zechariah, as was the custom, but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”

  29.    Then they asked the father what he would like to name the child. He wrote: “His name is John.” Immediately his mouth was opened and he began to speak, praising God.

  30. Bible Verse Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Matthew 24:35
