  1. Vehicle efficiency DonatasKveselys Florian Bergmann

  2. Need to improve tires • Car tires account for 20% fuel consumption • Estimated wear off 40,000km Fig. 1: Tires magic triangle

  3. Nanotech tire performance enhancement • Nanoprene – made from polymerized styrene and butadiene. Particle size 50nm • Reduced wear, better grip, maintained rolling resistance • Nanosize silica particles • Enhanced rolling resistance and wet traction

  4. Enhancing fuel itself • NanoTech Fuel Additive - stable, three dimensional lattice structure consisting of nano-clusters, evenly distributed within the fuel in a tank.

  5. Already available H2OIL additive Fig. 2: F2-21 additive

  6. Advantages • Fuel Saving up to 25% • Increased engine power • Large reduction of emissions

  7. Efficency loss in fuel cell sluggish oxygen reduction at the cathode is one main reason for efficiency loss => catalyst?

  8. Finding catalyst for cathode Properties: • Good eletronic conductivity • Chemical and structural stability during oxygen adsorption and reduction • Suitable operating temperature • High uptake of oxygen • Ability to decompose intermediate products as H2O2 • Chemical compatibility to electrolyte • Tollerant to contaminants (e.g. COx, NOx, SOx) => suitable catalyst?

  9. Todays solution: Platinum (Pt) Pt with carbon support: • Fulfils many conditions (e.g. conductivity, operating temperature) ...but... • is very sensitive to contamiants • is very expensive => alternative?

  10. Tomorrows solution: N-CNT? Nitrogen doped Carbon Nano tubes: • metal-free electrode • much better electrocatalytic activity • long-term operation stability • tolerance to CO-poisioning • High surface area • Good thermal stability

  11. Progress First (vertically aligned) N-doped CNT was synthesized in 2009 still in fundamental Research

  12. Conclusion • There are still many possibilities to improve efficiency... • ...which are in different states of development • As car industry is interested we reckon a quick progress
