School-led & school-based ITT ‘We need to make sure that our very best educators are at the heart of training our next generation of teachers’ Secretary of State June 2012 Categories of involvement for schools in ITT: • a partner school for an accredited provider • offer School Direct places • become an accredited provider (SCITT) The TA will encourage schools in each category to take a more active role in the recruitment/selection & design/delivery of ITT & OFSTED will inspect this from Sept 2012

What are we looking for – recruitment & selection From some To all Schools talent spot and recruit the trainees they want for School Direct Schools offer school experience to potential trainees (NB. TA SEP programme) Assessment and selection done in schools including interviews, mini lessons, lesson observations, pupil voice panels Schools select trainees from PGCE programmes for school experiences and use these as road test for NQT-spotting School colleagues on interview panel

What are we looking for - design & delivery From some To all Supplementing ITT programmes for school/alliances trainees with additional elements designed and delivered by school/ alliance Modules delivered by schools/alliance for an HEI’s full cohort Schools design & deliver high proportion of training for SD trainees with QTS award only done by accredited provider Entire ITT programme based in school School can bid to become accredited provider School experiences and school mentors

Achieved by……… • Accredited Providers - Reviewing, reframing & reconceptualising provision as necessary - Promoting school-led ITT and Partnership work • Teaching schools • Provide funding for potential teaching schools to draw down NLE/SLE expertise in ITT • Provide SD salaried places for potential teaching schools • Assess and shape ITT involvement in teaching schools • Provide ITT guidance materials for schools as part of the NC package and share best practice at NC events • Allocate SD places to teaching schools

Achieved by…..… • School Direct • Expand SD and introduce SD Salaried for 2013/1 • Promote awareness of SD among schools and applicants • Teach First - Expansion of places - Share best practice • SCITTs - Expansion of provision • EBITTs - Closure; amalgamation; TS alignment for SCITT; new provision

Key design and delivery considerations • Programme design reflects the expertise and range of schools (Special Schools, Teaching Schools, PRUs, Designations) • Programme delivery : indicate expert practitioner involvement at all levels – consider shared appointments/flexible deployment across schools/centre-based • Strategic Management – school involvement in Board • Raised focus on Recruitment & Selection and Partnership • Evaluate provision against : Ofsted Framework; Partnership Audit; Special School/PRU prompts; School-led prompts • Review Partnership Agreement • Audit of SSP, Behaviour, SEN(D) & application of emerging guidance and materials

Action – all providers: • Review provision against policy drivers & statements • Determine ways of developing & promoting School Direct across the partnership • Consider key prompts in ‘School-led & school-based ITT’ questions • Consider extent to which Teaching Schools are fully leading and shaping ITT in your partnership • Develop partnerships with Special Schools & foundation- setting for further development of PRU early implementers’ work • Ensure revised SED evidence focuses on impact & outcomes of school-led/based provision • Review provision against the new (Sept 2012) Inspection Handbook (specifically noting paras 106 & 107 re: focus of inspection on the partnership)
