  1. Electric Charge & Static Electricity Electricity & Magnetism Chapter 2.1 Pages 46-53

  2. Electric Charge • All objects are made up of atoms • Atoms consist of 3 parts • Protons • Electrons • Neutrons

  3. Electric Charge • Ben Franklin described each part of the atom as having an electric charge • Protons have a positive charge (+) • Electrons have a negative charge (-) • Neutrons have a neutral charge (neither + nor - )

  4. Repel & Attract • Charges that are the same repel one another or push each other away • Charges that are opposite attract one another or pull each other together • The same rules apply to magnets

  5. Electric Fields • The force of electric charges can be felt for a distance • An Electric Field is the area of force surrounding a charge • Charged particles placed in an electric field will either repel or attract.

  6. Electric Fields

  7. Static Electricity • Objects become charged by gaining or losing electrons • Protons are bound to the atom tightly • Static Electricity is when charges build up on an object • Static means fixed or unmoving • Static charges do not flow

  8. What to Work On • Section 2.1 Review Questions • Page 53, Questions 1-4 and 6 DUE:Friday, 3/16

  9. Atoms are made of 3 parts. Which of these is NOT one of them?

  10. Put the following parts in the correct order: Negative, Neutral, Positive.

  11. Which of these statements is TRUE?

  12. Transferring Charge • Charges can be moved from one object to another in 3 different ways: • Friction moves electrons by rubbing two objects together • Conduction transfers electrons from a chargedobject through touch • Induction is when electrons move from an object because of electric fields.

  13. Static Discharge • When a negatively charged object and a positively charged object are brought together, electrons move until both have the same charge • Static Discharge: Two charged objects will create a balanced charge.
