  2. What is petroleum? • A liquid mixture of hydrocarbons and can be extracted and refined to produce fuels including gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil • Fossil fuel formed by dead organisms beneath earth’s surface • World uses 88 million barrels a day in manufacturing • Depleting rapidly

  3. Location in Distillation Tower • Top of distillation tower • Crude oil enters tower • Separates into different oil substances • Such as gasoline, petroleum jelly • Gasoline product then catalyzed to extract rubber

  4. How is petroleum used in shoes? • Rubber soles. • Artificial rubber • Petroleum carbon molecules chemically altered so they become molecules called dynes • then re-altered to form a long chain called polymers • polymers are the finished 'synthetic rubber'

  6. Time of Manufacturing • Depends on style and producer • It only takes approximately 40 minutes for the machines to make a pair of Nike Shoes. • The rubber for the sole of the shoe is what takes the longest to make. • To produce the rubber sole, it may take about an hour

Manufacturing Process • mainly four departments in which a progressive route is followed for producing finished shoes. • Clicking or Cutting Department • Outside of shoe • Closing or Machining Department • Sew together pieces, make shoes 3D • Lasting & Making Department • Attach sole • Finishing Department • Waxed, polished, made pretty

  8. Disposal of Waste • Depends on company and location • Nike attempts to recycle and compost 75% of their waste. The remainder goes to landfills.

  9. Serious benefits to mankind? • Protection • Better traction • Waterproof • Less stomping noise • More comfortable • Does not require the death of an animal unlike leather • Athletic shoes- • Support • Reduce injury • Spring • Comfort

Benefits to mankind according to wiki answers • Welllll… if the soles were metal and then you kicked someone, it would hurt them a lot. • And then if you wanted to wash them, they’d ruin your washing machine. So that’s why they’re rubber. • Adds pep to your step • Can’t be shocked by electricity. Saves your life.

  11. Risk if not manufactured • Have to use leather= • Killing animals • Clinking sound • Not waterproof • Damage easier • Or go barefoot • Disease • Amputations • Smelling peoples feet • Stub toes • yuckkk
