  2. Early Life • Born in 1875 • His mother was prone to depression and Carl feared her – led to distrust of women's mental state • Developed fear of education due to bullying by his classmates

  3. Early Career • Studied medicine at Basel University • Worked in a psychiatric asylum where he wrote his first book on techniques of word association. • Sent his book to the notable scientist Freud beginning their 6 year friendship

  4. Freud and Jung • Studied for years under Freud developing his own theories that branched off of Freud's • Largely disagreed with Freud's insistence on sexual motivation in phycology • Created separate theories of Dream analysis,and the unconscious

  5. Dream Analysis • Developed idea of subject level • The dreamer projects his own philological state in dreams • Mother = Feminine side • Believed firmly in feuds theory of dream interpretation and merely attempted to add to it

  6. Collective Unconscious • The unconscious works through archetypes • Archetypes are innate mental themes about types of people • Mothers behave in caring and supportive ways due to their mental mother archetype. • Believed in the importance of self achieved through development and unity of both the conscious and unconscious minds • Unconscious doesn’t develop as it is universal from birth

  7. Archetypes • Universally effecting all humans • Used to explain how similar character traits in parents or mentors develop similarly in all parts of the world

  8. Do you believe that the presence of archetypes proves the existence of a collective unconscious?

  9. Personal Unconscious • People develop personal symbols based on life experience • If a person is nearly dies or simply is hurt in a fall they may see heights as a symbol for death and pain. • Often varies from the collective unconscious interpretation

  10. Do you believe that fears are all rooted in life experience and the personal unconscious?

  11. Introverts – Look inwards for emotional and philological stability • Extroverts – rely on intimacy with others for stability.

  12. Is it better to be an introvert or an extrovert or are they both viable ways to live?

  13. Criticisms • Believed that Jung had no definitive proof for any of his ideas • Difficult to provide research that could either back or dispute his theory's
