  2. FUNDAMENTALS OF VIDEO EDITING • “When editing is done well, it will be largely unnoticed by the viewing audience”. • What is Editing • Editing is reviewing and changing a document by making additions, deletions, or other changes to conform to some agreed-upon standard.

  3. In Video editing we have: • 1. Linear and • 2. non- linear editing

  4. Linear Editing • Linear video editing is the process of selecting, arranging and modifying the images and sound recorded on videotape whether captured by a video camera, or recorded in a studio. • Video shots are structured in such a way that they are shot in order and of correct length. This process does not require any additional equipment other than the Camcorder itself, but requires good shooting and organizational skills at the time of the shoot.

  5. Non-Linear Editing (NLE) • This is a method that allows you to access any frame in a digital video clip regardless of sequence in the clip. This method allows you to easily include fades, transitions, and other effects that cannot be achieved with linear editing. • Video and audio data are first captured to hard disks or other digital storage devices. The data is either recorded directly to the storage device or is imported from another source. Once imported they can be edited on a computer using any of a wide range of software.

A computer for non-linear editing of video will usually have a video capture card to capture analog video and/or a FireWire connection to capture digital video from a DV camera, with its video editing software. Modern web based editing systems can take video directly from a camera phone over a GPRS or 3G mobile connection, and editing can take place through a web browser interface.

  7. Stages of Video Production • This lecture is focused on Post Production but as editors, it’s important to have at least a basic knowledge and vital input in the various stages of video production because the editor bears the brunt of errors in pre-production and production. • Even though there is only so much that can be taken in this class what I will try to do, is to point out the crucial parts of post production that can make your production outstanding

The 4 major areas of Video Production are: • 1.       Pre Production • 2.       Production • 3.       Post Production • 4.       Archiving • You need to give attention to the above mentioned so that you can devote you post production time to creative editing and not trying to fix problems. • If you are not responsible for all these aspects, you should have a meeting with the other teams to let them know what your requirements are.

  9. Pre-Production • This is the planning stage which includes: • 1.       Scripting • 2.       Sourcing for equipment • 3.       Determining the camera angles • 4.       Planning and liaising with all production crews i.e. Light, Sound, Audio recording, stage set etc

  10. All these are crucial to your edit. Most of us deal with talk shows or teaching programs and if you have great picture and there is no audio recorded, you might as well through the tapes away. • You need to have a script which shows what each crew should be doing at a particular time. When should the lights be dimmed, when should the sound track be played, all these have to be determined in pre production and properly scripted.

  11. Production • This is the actual recording where everything needs to be synchronised. You need a director for each production to synchronise all the activities, brief all the crew and ensure every one works according to the script. • 1.       Communication with all members of the Production Crew • 2.       Early set up • 3.       Rehearsals • 4.       Contingency plan

  12. Post Production • At this stage you have finished your shoot and are back to the studio with all your footage. You are ready to tell the story in a most creative way. • A good edit tells a story that everyone understands. Have you ever watched a promo and then at the end everyone looked at each other wondering what the point was or you just didn’t get the joke? That’s bad story telling. • When your edit is complete, it should communicate your message clearly to your audience.

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER • 1.     You minister through your edit. • Through your edit, the same anointing that was present during the program you recorded should be present – E.g Night Of Bliss programs, Healing School programs • You edits must minister, inspire, encourage, and convey the ministry vision. E.g talk show programs

  14. 2. Different people watch your program. • Viewers who want to get blessed • Critics • Experts in your field • People who want to learn form you • Therefore each edit must be memorable and excellent!!!

  15. 3. Diligence • Proverbs 22:29...Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings. In simple terms, a diligent man will find himself amongst men of influence and affluence. • EDITING REQUIRES DILIGENCE!!! • Diligence refers to a consistent culture of care and thoroughness in effort or work. Painstaking effort.

  16. 4. Define your brand. • Branding in simple terms is stigmatization... A label. • What identifies this production. Your program is a brand. E.g Atmosphere For Miracles • ·    Determine what are your production standards. Develop SOP’S for your work. E.g fonts and size for text, storyline, etc • ·     What are your colours- blue, gold, etc

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS • Follow your Script • Capture all the require footage necessary for the edit, this will make your edit richer • Would the edit require graphics, or a voice over? • Would it require soundtracks? • Multi-track audio recording. • No internet pictures, please! Except in news reporting or general information.

  18. PRACTICALS Video editing- Common mistakes • Dissolving into the same camera • Cutting into the same camera • When to use cuts or dissolves- fast pace, slow pace. • Borrowing shots • Establishing shots depending on your production-talk shows, Teaching programs • Shaky shots • Using High Angle and Jib shots- consider the movement. • Roving shots- Always consider the people in the shot

  19. Ensure you do not have typographical errors- a very grievous error • Eliminate uncomplimentary shorts i.e. sweaty faces • Stammering or stuttering or clearing ones throat • Colour Correction- maybe necessary to get similar pictures • Colours for TV i.e red bleeds, fluorescent green is assaulting, text that blend with the back ground • Fonts- fonts must be legible. For Teaching and transcribing, they should be consistent size. For Teaching – dissolves, for transcribing- cuts/ short dissolves.

  20. Flickering cards • Audio is King. • Having consistent audio levels throughout your program; especially when transiting from different segments- audio mixer • The use of soundtracks can make or break your edit. • Experiment and read up on your software.

  21.     Archiving • Develop a library for your finished edits. • Have 2 copies of your edits- A MUST!!! • 1. As edited • For teaching programs or transcribed programs like Healing School, Real Miracles Today or Rhapsody of Realities • - with scriptures/ text • - without scriptures/ text • Always have a clean master copy of your edit. • 2. As transmitted. • On Tape or/ and Hard drive
