  2. When writing, it is important to engage your audience. One very important way to do this is through word choice. • Read this passage: The big scary spider ran quickly across the classroom floor; the students screamed and jumped on their chairs. The words in red are REALLY BORING! So…

  3. Alternative words …it’s important to look for SYNONYMS. The gigantic petrifying spider ran hurriedlyacross the classroom floor; the students screechedand flew onto their chairs. By replacing the boring words with more interesting synonyms, your writing will be much more engaging for the reader!

  4. Adding interesting words also helps the reader understand a deeper meaning. • She dashedout of the house, across the clearing and along the lane that twisted up the valley side away from the river. Alfred was only a short way ahead, his gait as slow and ponderous as his speech. Walk/pace Heavy/lumbering The way the scene has been described tells us more about the characters – one is urgent and rushing, the other slow and a bit boring – we also know more about the setting.

  5. Have a go… • James quickly realised that he was very late. His heart started thumping as he ran as fast as he could up the street towards his destination. Suddenly Desperately Thudding Violently Speedily Have a go at replacing or adding words to make this passage more exciting.
