  1. Literacy Focus Answering questions with full sentences

  2. Why answer questions using full sentences?Full sentences are an important part of any piece of writing, in lots of subjects.Learning how to use them is a useful skill to make your writing easier to read (and easier to write).

  3. For example… When writing answers to questions in class, it’s not time effective to keep writing out every question, and then your answer. BUT… It’s also not helpful to just write the answer, and not the question. E.g if you see the answer ‘15’ written down in your book, you don’t know what the question was in the first place!

  4. So… We use full sentences to include detail and accuracy in our writing.

  5. First of all… When answering a question, think about its features. For example: What time did John leave for school? ‘time’ is the main idea of the question ‘leave’ is the action ‘John’ is the subject

  6. So… You need to make sure the 3 features of the question, are included in your answer. What time did John leave for school? ‘time’ is the main idea of the question ‘leave’ is the action ‘John’ is the subject John left for school at 7:30am. subject main idea action

  7. Have a go… (can you work out which are full sentences and which aren’t?) Where will my plane land? My plane will land in Terminal 2. How are they going to get to town? Walk. What have your parents asked for, for Christmas? I want money. What film did you watch last night? We watched Avatar last night.

  8. Have a go… (write full sentences for the following questions) What did your cousins call their baby? Where do you think we should meet in town? How did you manage to spend all of your money? Please can I have something to drink? How good are you at writing in full sentences?
