  1. Earth and Space 2 Review

  2. I can explain how the sun and the ocean interact in the water cycle.

  3. Write a summary statement to help communicate what the sun and the ocean are responsible for in the water cycle. • The sun provides the heat energy for evaporation to take place, and most of the water evaporates from the oceans.

  4. Describe the major processes in the water cycle: • Precipitation: the process in which water is returned to the earth by means of rain, snow, sleet, or hail • Accumulation: the collection of water on the ground in puddles, rivers, lakes or oceans • Evaporation: the process of changing from a liquid to a gas (heat needed) • Transpiration: the release of water vapor into the air from plant’s leaves • Condensation: the process of changing from a gas to a liquid (cooler temperature needed)

  5. I can identify and provide examples of the difference between weather and climate • Weather is… • the condition of the atmosphere at the current time or for a short period of time. • We can look outside and describe the weather because it is happening right now. • Climate is… • the general weather patterns of a specific area over a long period of time. • We need weather data from a long period of time to determine the climate of an area.

  6. Examples of Weather and Climate • Weather: • Raining, thunderstorms, tornado, cloudy or not cloudy, sunny or not sunny, high temperature for the day, low temperature for the day • Can you think of any other types of weather? • Climate: • Average precipitation, average temperature, hot temperatures all year long • Can you think of anything else we can include for climate?

  7. Climate Zones… • This zone is furthest away from the equator and has cool summers and cold winters. • Polar Zone! Burrrrrr! • This zone receives the most direct sunlight all year long. • Tropical zone! It’s hot outside!!!! • This zone has distinct seasonal changes. • Temperate zone! This is where we live! Is in between the polar and tropical zones on our climate maps in our journals. Take a look!

  8. I can demonstrate that the Earth rotates approximately one time every 24 hours on its axis causing day and night and the apparent movement of the sun. • Day and night combined will equal one full rotation. • One day is equal to how many hours? • 24 hours • Does the sun really move across the sky? • Nope! The rotating Earth makes it look like the sun is moving, but the sun is stuck in one place at the center of our Solar System.

  9. I can compare the physical characteristics of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. • What do the Sun, Earth, and the Moon all have that help keeps us grounded? • Gravity! Since the Sun is the largest it has the greatest gravitational pull. The larger the object, the greater gravitational pull that object will have. • How does gravity help or impact us on Earth? • Keeps us in orbit around the sun; keeps us from floating off the surface of the Earth; the pull of the gravity between the Earth and the Moon creates our tides.

  10. Sun, Earth, and Moon… • What are the similarities between the Earth and the Moon? • Both made of rock • Similar landforms except that there is no change on the Moon because there is no wind or rain. The formation of the landforms on the Moon would not occur because of weathering. What would be a more likely way for landforms to form on the moon? • Direct impact of an asteroid might create a crater.

  11. What Can I do to better prepare myself for my science CBA?
