  1. Module 3 Finance

  2. Finance If there is one thing above all others that people are tempted to mismanage, it is money. Almost every decision in business has a financial impact. Consequently, businesspeople need to understand God’s principles that relate to finances.

  3. Finance Debt is not specifically prohibited in Scripture, but it is discouraged. It is always presented in a negative context and with warnings about its abuse. Read the first portion of Romans 13:8 from several different Bible translations. “Owe no man anything” (KJV) “Let no debt remain outstanding” (NIV) “Pay all your debts” (TLB) “Owe nothing to anyone” (NASB) “Keep out of debt and owe no man anything” (Amp)

  4. Finance The Bible on Borrowing The Bible on Lending The Bible on Giving

  5. Finance The Bible on Borrowing “Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender” Proverbs 22:7

  6. Finance Debt Free Promised reward Obedience Presumption Curse Inflicted Debt

  7. Finance Avoid presumption “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow...” James 4:13-14 Avoid personally guaranteeing business debt Avoid long-term debt “Let no debt remain outstanding.” Romans 13:8 (NIV)

  8. Finance The Bible on Lending “The Lord will...bless all the work of your hand: and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow” Deuteronomy 28:12

  9. Finance Be careful that you are not too eager to extend credit in order to make a sale. In doing so, you may inadvertently become the financial backer of failing businesses. Since you are committed to pay your creditors whether or not your debtors pay you, think carefully about how much credit you extend and to whom. Let these two principles be your guide: -Limit your lending to those who are faithful in repaying -Do not extend credit to those who will be damaged by it You have a right to the money that is owed you, but if you are willing to violate the principles God has established for recovering that money, your loss is much more than a financial one.

  10. Finance Make every decision in light of your primary function – to glorify God.

  11. Finance “Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back” Luke 6:30 What Would You Do? (Be Honest!) What Would Jesus Do?

  12. Finance You cannot divorce yourself from what others do on your behalf. Any individual or agency that represents your business makes an impact on your reputation and your witness to the world. It is your responsibility to ensure that your staff or agents represent not only your financial interests but your values as well. While the courts may provide a legal solution they often leave the problems of unforgiveness and anger in their wake.

  13. Finance As set out in: Matthew 18:15-17 “If your brother sins… Go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.”

  14. Finance The Bible on Giving “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son.” John 3:16

  15. Finance Benefits of Giving Benefit 1 – An Increase in Intimacy Matthew 6:21 tells us; “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

  16. Finance Benefits of Giving Benefit 2 – An Increase in Heaven Matthew 6:20 reads, “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal.”

  17. Finance Benefits of Giving Benefit 3 – An Increase on Earth

  18. Finance Benefits of Giving Benefit 4 – An Increase and Enrichment of the Company’s Culture “I shovel the money out, and God shovels it back in - and God has a larger shovel than I do.” R.G. Le Tourneau , Movers of Men and Mountains

  19. Finance Questions to Consider – Digging Deeper Read Luke 6:30. How do you interpret this in your business? • “Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.” • Luke 6:30
