  2. Product Overview • BlackBerry is a RIM (Research In Motion) product which enables secure access to e-mail, tasks, calendar and contacts. • Designed for corporate environments using Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino . • Operating over GPRS, the BlackBerry handheld device permanently links the user into their corporate e-mail. • GPRS functionality integrated into the device , no need to connect to a GPRS terminal. • Utilises ‘push’ technology, no dial up necessary.

  3. BlackBerry What does Blackberry comprise of ?

  4. Component parts of the BlackBerry solution • A handheld mobile terminal • Desktop synchronisation software • BlackBerry Enterprise Server (Upto 500 users (Software only no hardware provided)) • Blackberry APN “blackberry.net” • Client Access License. 6. Wireless Email Reconciliation • A user can read, move, or delete email messages on either their handheld or their computer and have those changes synchronized wirelessly. • One-way folder synchronization enables users to create, delete, rename, or move a folder on their computer and sync these changes wirelessly so that they appear on the handheld. • OTA deletion etc can be turned off on a per user basis. This will require users to cradle to update folders, file emails and delete emails.

  7. Browser • The BlackBerry Browser, in conjunction with the Mobile Data Service, provides a simple and effective mechanism for the delivery of corporate applications to BlackBerry. Test URL to MDS Page from Handheld= IP address of BES:8300/admin/common MDS Homepage URL from BES PC Internet explorer = 127.0.0.1:8300/admin/common

  8. Remote Address Lookup Facility • Handheld users can search for recipients in the Global Address List over the air, during an email composition, forward or reply. • Search using letters from the entry’s First Name, Last Name or Both • Search results can be viewed in bundles of 20 • Matched user(s) can be added to handheld address book

  10. Device Security • IT is advised that the Handheld Device is set up to be Password protected. From the Options / Security Menu. • A Security Timeout and password can be enforced from the BES for each device through IT Policy creation. • If a password is entered incorrectly 10 times the device is wiped. • The device can easily be Disabled or killed from the BES. • Triple DES security end to end, therefore all data is encrypted. • Each Handheld has a unique Key between the Handheld Device and the BES

  11. Server Architecture and Message Flow

  12. BlackBerry Network Architecture Triple DES Encryption (Data Encryption Standard) Translates data into a ‘secret code’ – a common key (translation table used by host and recipient) allows encrypted data to be decrypted and read Firewall New Email Outlook Client Mail Server BES Internet RIM GPRS Infra structure Blackberry.net APN MAPI (Message Application Programming Interface) Standard Messaging protocol that allows applications to utilise messaging services SRP/TCP (Server Relay Protocol) Propriety RIM protocol Encrypts & compresses email (Transmission Control Protocol) Sets up connection & reliable stream delivery. Guarantees delivery & correct order of packets. Acknowledgement & re-delivery as necessary. GGSN SGSN VF GSM / GPRS Network BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) Checks for filters created by BlackBerry Desktop Manager – separate to Outlook filters BSC BTS

  14. Exchange BES Internet GPRS Message Flow to the Handheld • New Message arrives on the Exchange server. • The BES maintains a MAPI connection to the user’s mailbox and detects new message arrival. • Messages filters are applied on the BES to decide whether the message should be forwarded. • A random message ID (RefId) and tag are assigned to the message. • The message is compressed and encrypted. • The message is sent to the wireless network through port 3101. • The message arrives on the handheld. It is decompressed and unencrypted. • The handheld then sends confirmation of receipt back to the BES. Forward? Compress Encrypted

  15. Exchange BES Internet GPRS Message Flow from the Handheld • A user sends a message from the handheld with a RefID is assigned. • The message is compressed and encrypted. • It is sent over GPRS to the BES Server. • The message is decrypted and decompressed. If the message cannot be decrypted using the users key then the message is discarded. • The message is placed in the user outbox. If this is a forwarded email or a reply then the RefID is used to locate and append the original message. • Exchange delivers the message. • A copy is saved in the users Sent items unless the user specifies otherwise through desktop manager. Decompress Decrypted

  16. E mail delivery • E mails delivered to the BlackBerry device are compressed and broken down into 1.5 KB chunks. • Customer will view the first part of the e mail and then request the next section by selecting the ‘more’ option. • Maximum e mail size of 32KB e.g. any mails larger then this will be part delivered to the BlackBerry device. This is true for attachments as well.

  17. E mail delivery • If the device is out of coverage, RIM will deliver as soon as signal restored. • RIM Infer structure will only store 5 messages per device if the user is out of coverage. • Once 5 messages have been received the relay will inform the BES not to send out any further messages. • Messages are stored on the RIM Infer structure for 7 days and then deleted – however the messages stay on the customers Exchange server. • Filters can be set by the end user e.g. if they are on holiday so that no messages are pushed out to the BlackBerry device.
