Previous Research • Limited mainly to transition experiences of 1st year u/graduates or ‘non-traditional’ entrants into HE • Small amount of research into experiences of completing an FD • Some work on transition from HND/Cs (e.g. SPAT) • Very little on transition from FD into Year 3 of Honours degree

  4. Findings – Theme 1 “ They didn’t really tell us a lot” Need for more information and better communication

  5. Theme 2 “There’s a huge difference between going to a college and studying and going to a university and studying” Perceived differences between the FECs and the university

  6. Theme 3 “Am I capable of that standard”? Confidence in ability to meet challenges of Level 3

  7. Theme 4 “I think I’m a hamster in those balls, just do not stop, just do not stop” Factors that helped or hindered the ‘settling in’ process

  8. Recommendations Better communication and information Appropriate support

  9. Conclusions • Can be easy to assume that what is in place is working - if it doesn’t work, blame the individual but ............. • Important to review infrastructure in place to ensure that those wanting to make such a cross-institutional transition are supported to do so as painlessly as possible
