  1. Classwork: Set up Albert!!! #3 Energy Notes #4 Food for Thought Response Warm Up Which of the following is the basis for arranging elements in the modern Periodic Table Alphabetical order Masses of atoms Number of protons Date of discovery Thursday October 20

  2. #3 Energy Notes • Energy – the ability to do work • Work – the transfer of energy. Expressed in joules (j) • Kinetic energy – energy in motion • All moving objects have kinetic energy • Kinetic energy = mv2m = mass in kg 2 v = objects speed • The more mass an object has the more kinetic energy • The more speed an object has the more kinetic energy

  3. Crash Test VideoWhy are they soodistructive? • http://www.streetfire.net/video/crash-test-no-good_188627.htm

  4. What is more dangerous? • Driving a 1800 kg car 20 m/s? KE = mv2m =1700 kg 2 v = 20 m/s KE = (1800)(202) = 2 KE =360,000 j • Driving a 1200 kg car 30 m/s? KE = mv2m = 1200 kg 2 v = 30 m/s KE = (1200)(30) 2= 2 KE =540,000 j 66 mph 44 mph The car with less mass, but going a faster speed is more dangerous Speed has a bigger effect on Kinetic Energy

  5. #11 Other Types of Kinetic Energy • Thermal Energy – the kinetic energy from motion of the particles that make up an object • Light Energy – energy produced by electrically charged particles. Can travel through a vacuum (like space) • Sound Energy – energy caused by an objects vibrations • Sound Energy – energy caused by an objects vibrations

  6. #4 Food for Thought: • The mallet at the strong man challenge is sooohuge • Would you rather have a large mallet or a small mallet, WHY?

  7. Classwork: #5 Potential Energy & Conservation of Energy Notes Homework: #6 Describe 2 examples when potential energy is transferred to kinetic energy Warm Up Which of the following is an example of kinetic energy? Swinging a golf club A rock sitting at the top of a hill A rollercoaster car at the peak of the ride A car at the stop light Friday October 21

  8. Potential Energy – energy an object has because of its position • Gravitational potential energy – energy an object has because of its height from the ground • Gravitational potential energy = weight x height • How much energy does a bowling ball That weight 10 Newtons have if it is sitting on a rack that is 3 meters off the ground? GPE = 10 x 3 = 30 Joules • Mechanical energy – total energy of motion and position of an object • Mechanical energy = potential + kinetic energy Weight is in Newtons 1 lb about 4 Newtons

  9. The Law of Conservation of Energy • Law of Conservation of Energy States that energy can not be created or destroyed • It is only transformed from 1 form to another • Potential Energy gets transferred into kinetic energy

  10. The ball pauses in the air, it is no longer traveling up so it has 100% potential energy. And 0% Kinetic 35% Potential Energy and ______% Kinetic Energy About 50% Potential Energy b/c it is closer to “ground”. 50% Kinetic Energy 25% Potential Energy and 75% Kinetic Energy 0% Kinetic Energy when it is on “ground” 100% Potential Energy

  11. Roller Coaster Videohttp://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=C574499A-2138-4CF3-A201-0A4EBEB730E5&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US • Not all potential energy is transferred into kinetic energy, some is lost • In the case of the roller coaster you see not all potential energy is transferred into kinetic energy • Some energy is lost due to friction • Friction – a force that opposes motion between 2 surfaces • Energy can be lost due to friction or air resistance
