  4. Phrasal and prepositionasl verbs express a particular meaning: idiomatic literal Take off your jacket. I’ve taken up golf. Put out the cat. The car broke down. Only 20 people turned up. Look at the picture.

  5. PHRASAL VERBS WITH LITERAL AND IDIOMATIC MEANING PUT OUT I always put out the cat at night. Put out the cigarette, please. (extinguish)

  6. PHRASAL VERBS WITH LITERAL AND IDIOMATIC MEANING PICK UP Can you pick up the diskette for me, please? I dropped it. I picked up some new slang expressions while watching that movie. (learn)

  10. verb + preposition+ complement • - Si cambiamos la preposición, el verbo no cambia de significado. • He waseating at thetable • He waseatingonthetable. • Al sustituir el sustantivo por un pronombre, no hay cambios: • He waseatingunderit. • - La preposición sirve solo para introducir el complemento. • 1.- He waseatingunderthetable.

  11. verb + preposition + complement • - La preposición sirve para dos cosas: • 1.- Como en el caso anterior, para introducir el complemento. • 2.- Para modificar el significado del verbo. • - Si cambiamos la preposición, el verbo SÍ cambia de significado. • He waslooking at thetable • He waslookingforthetable. • Son inseparables y por ello, al sustituir el sustantivo por un pronombre, no hay cambios: • He waslooking at it • 2.- He waslooking at thetable = PREPOSITIONAL VERB

  12. verb + adverb + complement PRASHAL VERB • 3.- Theman TOOK OFF hiscoat = Theplane TOOK OFF • El adverbio sirve para modificar el significado del verbo, pero no para introducir el complemento cuando lo hay. • Son separables, y si el complemento es un pronombre es obligatorio separarlos: • He TOOK OFF hiscoat He TOOK hiscoat OFF He TOOK IT OFF
