  2. Essential Question • What are the three branches in the national government and how are their jobs different? • How does the local, state, and national government work together?

  3. The three branches are: LEGISLATIVE EXECUTIVE JUDICIAL United states government

  4. Congress is head over this branch. It is a group of people elected to make laws for the country. Congress has two parts: The Senate and The House of Representatives. The legislative branch

  5. Fun Facts There are 100 senators. Each state has two senators. Senators meet in the U.S. Capitol building The senate

  6. Fun Facts There are 435 representatives. The more people that live in a state, the more representatives it has. They can be elected for more than one term. The house of representatives

  7. The president, is the head of the government. Americans vote every four years for their leader . After elected to serve his/her country, the president lives and works in the White House. The president is in charge of the armed forces. The president works with leaders of other countries. The Executive Branch

  8. The Supreme Court is the highest court is the U. S., and decide what laws mean. The nine judges can serve for as long as they live, or wish to retire. Each judge is chosen by the president. The Judicial branch

  9. Separation of Powers • All three branches of government have different powers and different jobs to do. • When branches of government have different powers, no branch can become too strong. (Checks and balances)

  10. Monuments • These are statues that help people remember a person or event. Washington Monument Abraham Lincoln

  11. Government • The president carries out the laws of the United States. (Executive) • The Congress (Legislative) makes the laws. • The Supreme Court (Judicial) explains the laws.
