Establishing the New National Government 1st President: George Washington -established tradition of a Cabinet – group of advisors to the President 2nd President: John Adams 3rd President: Thomas Jefferson (yes, the same man who wrote the Declaration of Independence!) -conflict with Alexander Hamilton over: 1. National Bank 2. state’s rights vs national govt rights 3. agriculture vs industry -led to political parties being established

Establishing the New National Government • What should the role of Supreme Court be? • John Marshall was the 1st Chief Justice of the Supreme Court • He issued rulings that established the Supreme Court as equal in power to the president and Congress • Most important court case was Marbury v Madison • Ruled that courts have the power of JUDICIAL REVIEW • Used to declare laws by Congress and actions by the president as UNCONSTITUTIONAL • Court’s job is to “interpret or explain” the laws
