  1. This is Your Brain. This Is How It Works.

  2. Parts of the brain: Keep in mind there are two distinct sides with different functions

  3. The Brainstem(Pathway to the Body) • Base of brain • Unconscious work • Autonomic functions (survival)

  4. The Cerebellum(Balance) • “little brain” • Large in size • 11% of brain’s weight • Center of balance

  5. The brain has 4 areas called lobes • Frontal • Parietal • Temporal • Occiptal

  6. The Frontal Lobes(Problem Solving) • Largest part • Move your body • Highly developed • Forms your personality

  7. The Parietal Lobes (Touching) • Two major divisions • Anterior and posterior • Senses hot and cold, hard and soft, and pain. • Taste and smell • Helps integrate the senses

  8. The Temporal Lobes(Hearing) • Process auditory stimuli • Subdivisions • Wernicke’s Area • Broca’s Area

  9. The Occipital Lobes (Seeing) • Located at lower central back of brain • Processes visual stimuli

  10. Taking sides….two sides that is! • Two sides or hemispheres of the brain: LEFT and RIGHT • We have two cerebral hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum. This is a bundle of nerves that allows each side of the brain to communicate with each other. • Each side of the brain processes things differently. • It is an outdated assumption that “artsy” type people are right-brained.

  11. Which are you? • I constantly look at a clock or wear a watch • I keep a journal or diary of my thoughts • I believe there is either a right or wrong way to do everything • I find it hard to follow directions precisely • The expression “Life is just a bowl of cherries” makes no sense to me

  12. Which are you? (continued) • I frequently change my plans and find that sticking to a schedule is boring • I think it’s easier to draw a map than tell someone how to get somewhere • To find a lost item, I try to picture it in my head where I last saw it • I frequently let my emotions guide me

  13. Which are you? (continued) • I learn math with ease • I’d read the directions before assembling something • People tell me I am always late getting places • People have told me that I’m psychic • I need to set goals for myself to keep me on track

  14. Which are you? (continued) • When somebody asks me a question, I turn my head to the left • If I have a tough decision to make, I write down the pros and the cons • I’d probably make a good detective • I learn music with ease • To solve a problem, I think of similar problems I have solved in the past

  15. Which are you? (continued) • I use a lot of gestures • If someone asks me a question, I turn my head to the right • I believe there are two ways to look at almost everything • I have the ability to tell if people are lying or guilty of something, just by looking at them

  16. Which are you? (continued) • I keep a “to do” list • I am able to thoroughly explain my opinions in words • In a debate, I am objective and look at the facts before forming an opinion • I’ve considered becoming a poet, a politician, an architect, or a dancer • I always lose track of time

  17. Which are you? (continued) • When trying to remember a name I forgot, I recite the alphabet until I remember it • I like to draw • When I’m confused, I usually go with my gut instinct • I have considered becoming a lawyer, journalist, or doctor

  19. Taking sides….how the two sides process information that is! Left Brain • Logical • Sequential • Rational • Analytical • Objective • Looks at parts Right Brain • Random • Intuitive • Holistic • Synthesizing • Subjective • Looks at wholes

  20. Left Hemisphere • processes things more in parts and sequentially • recognizes positive emotions • Identified with practicality and rationality • Understands symbols and representations • Processes rapid auditory information faster than the right (crucial for separating the sounds of speech into distinct units for comprehension) • is responsible for language development. It develops slower in boys, that is why males usually develop more language problems than females.

  21. Right Hemisphere • Recognizes negative emotions • High level mathematicians, problem solvers, and chess players use • The “non-verbal” side • Responds to touch and music (sensory) • Intuitive • Responsive to color and shape • Emotional and originative

  22. Taking sides….what information the two sides recognize! Left Brain • Letters • Numbers • Words Right Brain • Faces • Places • Objects
