  11. Workprogramme 2002 • No R&D in statistics or indicators - No calls • BUT, support activities (continuous submission scheme - deadline 28.2.2002 !!!) • Consolidation actions • AL VIII.1.1 - Clusters • AL VIII.1.2 - Networks of excellence and working groups • ALs VIII.1.5 & VIII.1.6 Co-operation • Preparation of next Framework Programme • AL VIII.1.10 Preparation of ERA (reference to statistics)

  13. Workprogramme 2002 Preparation of ERA and next FP • Next FP will be • more concentrated, in topics • significantly more important in resources for consortia • Need to be prepared: in 2002, possibility to build network(s) to • co-ordinate MS research activities • stimulate exchange of information and best practices

  14. Other activities • Large EPROS meeting in October 2001. Participation of • NSIs • Consortia • Experts • EPROS publication • First issue published • Second in preparation

  15. FP6

  16. FP6 • 2002-2006 (2003 for budget) • In the context of the ERA initiative • More concentration on limited topics • New instruments • Networks of excellence • Integrated projects • Use of article 169: notional programmes jointly implemented • Limited possibilities for projects FP5-like

  18. Structure of FP6

  19. Structure of FP6

  20. FP6 Possibilities for statistical research (Subject to the political decision) • Support to EU policies, in the context of the “Lisbon strategy”: improvement of the ESS • Information society priority: IT orientated R&D • ERA strengthening: opening and networking of national programmes • Knowledge society and Governance: co-ordination and improvement of the quality of the statistics produced • ERA monitoring: Science, technology and innovation statistics improvement

  21. 3 new instruments • Networks of excellence: • Lasting integration of research capacities • Long-term and multidisciplinary objectives • Implemented by a joint programme of activities • Genuine ‘virtual centres of excellence’ • High level of management autonomy • Gradual integration of work programmes • Selected on the basis of calls for proposals • Integrated projects • Programmes implemented jointly

  22. 3 new instruments • Networks of excellence • Integrated projects: • To boost competitiveness or to address major societal needs • To provide results applicable to products, processes or services • Research activities may be complemented by demonstration, innovation activities • High level of management autonomy • Implemented through overall financing plans • Selected on the basis of calls for proposals • Programmes implemented jointly
